A Vacation (Sort of) in Bed

It is Memorial Day weekend-a time when many Americans take mini-vacations to get themselves warmed up for the summer season. My kids, in fact, have gone off for the next three days with their Dad-a rare chance for the four of them to spend time together without interruptions and obligations. This means that I have my little world to myself for the next few days and, like many single parents/home business owners, I have been looking forward to all the work I'll get done! Typically, however, yesterday afternoon I started to get a scratchy throat and this morning I woke up feeling a bit under the weather. I'm still determined, however, to get as much work as possible done on this holiday weekend and that may mean taking my vacation in bed...

The other day, I wrote about how I have finally joined the land of the mobile with a handy little laptop computer. It is this little device that really makes it possible for me to be efficient and bed-ridden at the same time. Of course, I used to write things out "old school" by putting pen to paper just a few short weeks ago when I couldn't sit at my desk-but now I can bring the desk to my pillows and blankets.

There are times when I cannot decide if this modern world is amazing and progressive, or if we are inventing things to get us back to some semblance of the way things used to be. After all, I think Virginia Woolf wrote great sections of her famous novels while lying convalescing in bed and I know that as somewhat nomadic creatures historically, work has been a bit more portable than it has been since the industrial revolution. Now, I am not comparing myself in any way to Virginia Woolf-well, other than the fact that I am going to spend a day or two trying to work from bed...
