Computer Updates and Maintenance

Perhaps you are more patient and efficient than I am and you actually do all those computer updates and routine maintenance checks on a regular basis? For me, it seems like those little yellow-framed boxes are popping up on my computer constantly: “Update Needed” or “Check Status.” While I know in the back of my head that they are an important element to keeping my business computer in working order, it can be so time consuming! The last thing I want to do after signing on in a fit of inspiration is to have to “restart” my computer in order … Continue reading

Charts and Graphs for a Home Business

I LOVE charts and graphs. If there is an article in a magazine that includes colorful bar graphs or pie charts, that is an article I will at least look over. It was always one of those things I liked about doing annual reports and grant reports and other such things in my old career incarnation. Now that I have a simple, little home-based business, I don’t have the same opportunities for using and utilizing charts and graphs that I used to—but I still think there is a place for them in a small home business! Charts and graphs are … Continue reading

New Computer? Or More Memory?

I am technologically challenged–not necessarily in terms of how to create and save a file or how to use certain software programs, but definitely when it comes to understanding exactly how computers work. I don’t know my hard drive from my megabytes from a memory card. I’m not even entirely sure what the difference between a disk, cd, dvd, and zip drive is (thank goodness for teenagers)–but I am learning that when I think that I’m running out of capability, I might only need an upgrade–not an entirely new system for my home business. I have a tendency to just … Continue reading

Are You “Optimizing” Your Business Computer?

I want to be the first person to admit that I do not know all the programs, bells and whistles that are available on my computer. The one I use for my home business is relatively new—I purchased it brand new less than a year ago and took it right out of the box, hooked up all the peripheral equipment and went right to work. And, while I feel pretty efficient, I am willing to bet that I have not even begun to optimize my business computer and use it for all the things it is capable of… Taking a … Continue reading

Is It Time To Clean Out Your Computer Files and E-mail Inbox?

I am a self-confessed packrat when it comes to saving paper files. Alas, with the technological age, my packrat behavior has carried over into saving every e-mail and computer file I ever created. Recently, an Internet Technology expert advised that I need to periodically clean out unused files and e-mails so that my computer can work properly and I free up space on the “server” as well as speed things up on my hard drive too. I was shocked. I thought that cyberspace and this new computerized world meant that I had unlimited access to “space” where I could store … Continue reading

Addressing the Rise in Prices

In an earlier article posted today: Food and Gas Price Report, I discussed the latest information from the U.S. Department of Labor about our rising cost of food, energy and other goods. Here, I will offer some strategies and ideas for addressing the rise in prices. Let’s first address the rising food prices. To combat these prices and continue to provide food to your family you can (be sure to check the links for more information): Find substitutes for more expensive items, such as using dry milk for baking or drinking, giving up organic milk, baking your own bread, consuming … Continue reading
