Could You Use a Business Coach?by Kori Rodley Irons | More from this Blogger 17 Jun 2007 07:45 AM In recent years, the industry of "business coaches" has sprung up and is thriving in even small towns and cities. These individuals offer their services to encourage, guide, direct, and motivate business owners and help them organize and grow their businesses. Many business coaches focus on small business owners and some are even experts in working with start-ups and home-based businesses. What should you look for in a business coach and how do you know if you need one? If you are feeling stuck or, after reading all the business books and magazines you can get your hands on, are still wondering what you should do to build your business; or if you are someone who responds well to personal encouragement and working with other people; or if you'd just like to access a professional opinion from someone who is more educated in the business arena, a business coach might be for you. You can find business coaches in several ways--your local chamber of commerce is a good source for referrals--these will be local people and you may be able to get some references. You may also do a search in the phone book yellow pages, or even online. There are business coaches who you can access via e-mail or the internet and never actually meet in person. It will just depend on what you want and what you think your business needs. Be sure to ask for referrals and references and do your investigating prior to choosing a coach. You'll want someone who you can work with and who understands your business. You'll also want to have some corroboration when it comes to values and purpose. Someone who understands the specific needs of a small, home-based business is a must. A business coach is not like a therapist with whom you have to see weekly or monthly for a long stretch of time, and you should be able to negotiate how many meetings you need, what sort of coaching you are looking for and agree upon a price. Make sure you get everything in writing with a contract agreement--this is just good business! See Also: Tips to Become a Life Coach What's Your Idea of Professional?
