Help Others Plan Their Dream Vacation As A Home-Based Travel Agent

Perhaps you have worked with a travel agent to plan a vacation for yourself or your family. Maybe you have played the role of “travel agent” to plan your own getaway. If you enjoy travel and have good people skills, you may be able to start a home-based business as a travel agent. When I started looking around for information about becoming a home-based travel agent, I quickly realized that there are scams out there masquerading as “home-based travel agent opportunities”. If you are interested in becoming a home-based travel agent, do not let the fact that there are scammers … Continue reading

Creating a Dream Board

One of the things I have been working on, in order to encourage and inspire me in my home business is what I call a “Dream Board.” Although my work is with freelance writing, I think any work you do would benefit from a “Dream Board.” You just need to tweak it to suit your type of home business. I am using a tri-fold display board, the kind you often see in science fairs at schools. But you can create a “Dream Board” using almost anything. A bulletin board, journal or your wall is just some ideas. The first thing … Continue reading

Creating a Pantry

When we moved into our current home five years ago, I was thrilled by the size of the kitchen. I’d cooked in a thin, counter-less galley kitchen for five years, and before that I’d cooked in a teeny tiny space-less basement suite. Yuck! So a kitchen that had counter space, cabinet space, and even a place to put a table…this was my dream. Over the last few years, I’ve finally gotten around to creating a working pantry in said kitchen. Here are a few things that I’ve learned about how to create and maintain a successful pantry: Create a rotation … Continue reading

I Dream of Bookcases

I’ve always had a special relationship with books, for at least as long as I can remember. My very first books, The Poky Little Puppy and a set of children’s encyclopedias were treasured as no other toys were. Through the years, I also dreamed of having my own built-in bookcases. Through the years, I have had many substitutes for these imagined bookcases. First there was the headboard on my twin bed at home which held library books and a row of paperbacks I got for free through the library’s Reading is Fundamental program. Later, in college, there were a series … Continue reading

Creating an Office in Your Closet

Yes, you read that right. Currently, my office is housed in my closet. Let me explain. As I just said, I needed to set up a home office when I came home to work, and I needed to do it for cheap. I managed to do it cheaply ($126, not including those pens I love) but no matter how much furniture you have, you’ve got to have a place to put it all. Luckily for my husband and I, we live in a three-bedroom house with no children, which means we have our bedroom, my bedroom, and my hubby’s bedroom. … Continue reading

Creating An Affordable Home Office—Part 1

Most people have the perception (often a false one) that work-at-home moms (or dads) have elaborate home offices decked out with accessories that would rival a CEO’s. After all, a home office is where a work-at-home parent must manage not only the entire household (budget, children’s schedules, etc.), but it is also the headquarters for business operations, which generate income. Unfortunately, in many homes (ours included), the home office is really not an office at all. I work from a designated area off the living room that doubles as an “office.” While I would love to have an entire room … Continue reading

Developing an Emergency Action Plan

When you work in a traditional setting, such as an office, if you experience an emergency you can usually call into work. Or you might have the number to your boss. That was the situation our family faced a couple of weeks ago when my sister, who works in an office building, was involved in a car accident. Her husband just had to pick up the phone and leave a message with her boss that she had been injured and wouldn’t be into work the next day but they would keep her informed. But last week I learned that when … Continue reading

How to Set Goals for Your Home-Based Business

This is my last home business blog for the year 2011. So I don’t want to miss an opportunity to talk about the importance of setting goals for the year 2012. You may be at the start line. You are ready to get started, to get a home business off the ground. Or you may already be in the race, midpoint and wondering how much further you have to go. Perhaps you are the fortunate one who has already reached the end, experiencing nothing but victory in your accomplishments. No matter where you are in this, there are always things … Continue reading

Title Tricks

When you’re crafting layouts for every theme under the sun, it may be tough to come up with new titles time and time again. While some scrapbookers shy away from page titles, I enjoy coming up with unique word combinations that grab people’s attention. However, dreaming up a whimsical play on words is only half the fun of adding titles to scrapbook layouts. With titles you can flex your creative muscle when it comes to materials, placement and technique. As a beginner scrapper I would stick to the basics when creating page titles. Stickers, stamps and scrapbook chalk were about … Continue reading

Schedule, Schedule, Schedule

Schedule, schedule, schedule…it is the word that has been running through my mind for a good week now. That’s because I am beginning to learn even more the importance of this word when you are running a home business. Of course, I have always believed in having a schedule. I believe in scheduling your days to start and end at a certain time (if possible), and to even schedule in your breaks. But one of the things that I have come to realize recently is that scheduling needs to go beyond this. I need to schedule time for other things, … Continue reading
