Making The Work-At-Home Environment Work For You

One of the major differences between working at home and working outside of the home is the environment. This can be a blessing or a curse, depending upon who you are and what makes you feel happy and be productive. The good news is that while you cannot usually make casual Friday into casual every day when you work outside of the home, you can sometimes recreate the things that you love about working outside of the home in your home-based work life. For some people, working at home is a dream come true. Once they make the transition to … Continue reading

You Get to Decide How You Want to Do Business

You may think it goes without saying but for many of us, it takes us a while to learn just how much we are in charge of the HOW in how we do business. For those of us who are inexperienced or lacking confidence, we may be overly concerned with following “protocol” or trying to run our small home businesses like a large corporation. It is worthwhile I think for us to remind ourselves that we are the ones who get to decide exactly how we go about conducting our businesses. You do not have to do anything you absolutely … Continue reading

Creating a Home Business Culture

I know that the term “culture” has become a bit of a buzz word in recent years. Every business, company, family, and organization seems to be exploring what its “culture” is and we all talk about whether or not we fit in to a certain “culture.” We have appropriated a term that was used previously on a much larger scale and now use it for all sorts of small groups and organizations that we may be a part of. It is probably not surprising then that I think we can apply it to our small home businesses too. Surely you … Continue reading

Virtual Brag Book

I’m a parent, but I’m not on Facebook. So, if you want to see random photos of my cute kid, you have to come to my house or check in with this blog on a regular basis because I’m not looking to hop on the Facebook bandwagon anytime soon… or ever. I’m waiting for Anderson Cooper to feature me on a show dedicated to non-Facebook users under the age of 60. I’ll work it like a virgin. After all, … Continue reading

Parents and Oscar Night

You know you are a parent when you’ve only seen one of the Academy Awards’ 10 best-picture nominees… Let’s hear it for Toy Story 3! What does it say about me that I’ve seen Toy Story 3 four times in the movie theater and about 1000 times at home after my 6-year-old was gifted with the DVD version at Christmas? There was a time when I would plan my entire day around the Oscars. I’d clear my calendar, invite friends over, order in pizza or Chinese, and then refuse to answer the phone while I drooled over my favorite Hollywood … Continue reading

Bozo the Clown Dead at 83

Another death this week in addition to former Senator Jesse Helms was Larry Harmon, better known as Bozo the Clown, the character that enchanted children for more than 50 years. Harmon died at his home Thursday due to congestive heart failure. The character of Bozo the Clown was originated by Pinto Colvig back in 1946; however, it was Harmon that made countless appearances as Bozo and eventually licensed the character (after having bought the rights to Bozo) to others. Bozo the Clown was seen on stations all over the country, played by other actors. All in all, Harmon trained over … Continue reading

Encourage Participation

It is one thing to garner feedback from our customers and clients and encourage them to tell us what they think of our business operations. It is quite another to get our customers and clients involved with our businesses on a participation level. The more engaged individuals are, however, the more likely they are to be good, loyal customers and help us build our business where we want to take them. What does it mean to encourage participation? It is going to depend on the exact sort of business that you are operating as to what sort of participation can … Continue reading

Are You Focusing Too Much on Yourself?

Think of your worst sales experience ever–a time when you genuinely wanted to make a purchase but had a terrible time connecting with the salesperson who also obviously wanted to make the sale. Chances are, one of the main reasons that things were not working out is that the salesperson was not listening to you–he or she may have been being too self-absorbed; too focused on his or herself. As you strive to promote and grow your business, are you committing the big crime and focusing too much on yourself instead of on what your customers or clients need and … Continue reading
