Virtual Brag Book

I’m a parent, but I’m not on Facebook. So, if you want to see random photos of my cute kid, you have to come to my house or check in with this blog on a regular basis because I’m not looking to hop on the Facebook bandwagon anytime soon… or ever. GASP! Right? I know. I am a member of a dying breed. Everybody’s doing it, so why am I holding out? I’m waiting for Anderson Cooper to feature me on a show dedicated to non-Facebook users under the age of 60. I’ll work it like a virgin. After all, … Continue reading

Summer For The Home – Based Professional

Summer can be a challenging time for home – based professionals, but it can also be a lot of fun. Some of the challenges of summer include your family’s shifting schedule and figuring out how to fit in some vacation time from both a time management and a money management perspective. Fortunately, as a home – based professional you have a lot of decision – making power when it comes to finding creative solutions to those challenges. Since my children are very young and I am a stay at home mom, I do not yet have to figure out a … Continue reading

So, What Do You Do For Work?

One of the interesting things that I have experienced as a home – based professional is that funny feeling when you meet someone in either a personal or a professional setting and they ask you what you do for work. I am not sure whether anyone else feels weird when this happens, but I do. Not weird in a bad way, but weird in the sense that I have to pause and think for a moment before I decide how to explain what I do all day every day to the particular person that I am talking to. I suppose … Continue reading

Do You Brag about Working from Home?

I posted a Facebook status this week that managed to get quite a few likes. Yet I had hesitated on posting it because I didn’t want to sound like I was bragging. It was on a day that was absolutely gorgeous outside. Low 70’s with a breeze. I managed to finish my day’s work an hour before my children were expected home from school. So I went outside with my Kindle Fire and sat in my favorite corner of the yard. In addition to enjoying “Words with Friends,” reading and looking at my email, I decided to post a status … Continue reading

Does Your Filing System Really Work?

I’ve always been proud of how organized I am, you might even say I’ve been cocky about it. Paperwork comes into my house and it is immediately filed, most of the time. I brag that I can lay my hands on anything you want in under five minutes. I really thought my filing system was working. Probably because other than tax paperwork I haven’t needed anything in my filing cabinet in a while. I have a system, a good system that made sense to me, other people might not understand it but I thought I did. Until Hailey’s accident and … Continue reading

Working At Home Provides Parents With Needed Validation

If you are a parent, you probably have spent at least some time interacting with other parents that have children that are about the same age as your children. Sometimes these interactions are positive, and sometimes….not so much, thanks to a phenomenon called “mompetition”. Mompetition is a negative type of social interaction among parents of young children. It involves comparison and one-upmanship, boasting and judging. Before I became a parent, I knew that conversation among parents often involved comparisons of their children but I did not know to what extent. I do not think that it is something that you … Continue reading

Does Your Toddler Fit Through a Doggy Door?

My preschooler does, so I’m pretty sure the average size toddler can get in and out with no problem. Unfortunately, this is not a good thing. Despite the fact that my daughter brags about her “doggy trick” with limitless aplomb, the fact that she can shimmy through a pet door is no reason to celebrate. Fortunately, the doggy door she has come to embrace doesn’t belong to us, so I do have something to cheer about. Frankly, I was a bit shocked that she fit through the tiny door. The size of the opening is deceptively small. According to experts, … Continue reading

Let Customers Know You Are Working FOR Them

Sure, as home business owners, we are working for ourselves. We are also working to support our families and build a solid future. But, if we let too much of that reality and not enough of the working-for-the-customer come through in our dealings with clients and customers, we won’t have those clients and customers for very long… If you really think about it, there is a good chance that you are working for your customers and you are keeping their welfare and best interest in mind as you go about building your business. This should not be a bit secret! … Continue reading

Find Your Passion, or Fake it Until You Make It?

“Just find your passion”. If you’ve spent any time looking for home business opportunities, you’ve probably heard this piece of advice more than a few times. While we would all love to be making a great income doing something we are absolutely passionate about, it isn’t always that simple. When I started my work-at-home journey, I was convinced that I would make a tremendous amount of money selling crafts and painting children’s furniture. After all, I enjoyed it, I was passionate about it, and (if you can stand a bit of bragging) I was pretty darn good at it. Ultimately, … Continue reading

Business Idea – Bed and Breakfast

If you are looking for a home – based business idea and you love entertaining guests, than opening up a bed and breakfast might be the opportunity that you are looking for.
