Do You Have Enough Information to Make a Good Decision?by Kori Rodley Irons | More from this Blogger 30 Sep 2007 07:06 AM When it comes to our home businesses, it is often NOT that we cannot make a good or reasonable decision when problem-solving opportunities arrive, but that we don't gather enough information prior to making those decisions. We may feel rushed or as if we need to make a quick decision right now and we haven't even gotten a clear picture of the problem or the situation yet. It may just be a matter of our needing to take time to gather all that information, in order to make sound and successful decisions. It takes some patience and persistence in order to get together everything we need to make sound decisions. This means taking the time to dig around for the root of the problem, involving all the people and resources we need in order to truly assess a situation, and making sure that we are in a reasonable frame of mind for decision-making. This sounds practical and easy enough, but for many of us, when it comes to our home businesses, we feel like we need to be clicking along, making speedy and strong decisions (I've talked to more people who have this stereotypical idea of business people--like a quick-thinking stockbroker instead of someone more thorough and methodical). It is okay to slow down and gather information prior to making a decision. If you are quite the other type of person--someone who can take so long as to really be procrastinating, it might help to set a time limit for yourself. For example, you might say that you are going to take 3 hours or one day in order to look at a problem from all angles and gather information, and then you will make the best decision possible under the circumstances. Either way, give yourself permission to investigate a problem or situation prior to making a snap decision. You will likely make better choices and decisions if you do.
