Value in Taking Care of Your Home

How would you rate yourself as a homemaker? What do you think others in your home would say? You might consider evaluating yourself and having others do the same. Then you can give recognition to the strengths you have, yet consider some of the areas that could be worked on. I consider every area of my life to be important. Some of my roles include wife, mother, worker and friend. I take each of these areas seriously and I strive to be the best I can. But I also believe that my role in taking care of the home is … Continue reading

Nuance Helps Your Child to “Speak Dragon”

A company named Nuance has created a very special type of assistive software. It is called “Dragon Speech Recognition Software”. It can help children (and adults) who have certain types of special needs to be able to transcribe their thoughts. This might make homework a little less painful! School can be really difficult for children who have learning disabilities. Many schools have reduced the number of teachers and paraeducators due to budget cuts. This means that there are now more children placed into one classroom due to necessity, and not because this is the best way to provide an education. … Continue reading

Using Encouragement to Motivate Your Teen

When my children were younger one of the parenting concepts I tried to follow was to catch your child doing good and give them recognition for that. This was especially helpful during the years when my children were around 2, 4 and 7 years old. Now that I have a preteen and teenagers, I am finding that parenting concept to be helpful yet again. It probably isn’t really this way but it sometimes feels like there is always something going on. There is always some issue with at least one of my children. Having two children in middle school and … Continue reading

Sandra Bullock’s Adoption Finalized

I love Sandra Bullock as an actress. Her movies are outstanding and she finally achieved well-deserved recognition with an Academy Award for The Blind Side. The first movie where she caught my attention was Demolition Man. That is an awful movie. Her career obviously survived. My very favorite Sandra Bullock movies are Miss Congeniality and Two Weeks’ Notice. Practical Magic has just recently become a must-see Sandra Bullock movie. I finally saw Hope Floats and While You Were Sleeping too. I have yet to watch the award-winning The Blind Side. Like many people who tend to follow celebrities through movies, … Continue reading

Teens Need Mentors

Last week my 16-year-old son went through a one week military encampment. He went into it as a quiet, introverted teen and came out of it a more mature, confident young man. He was stretched beyond what he thought he could endure, he was taken out of his comfort zone and he was challenged to a great degree. When I heard the stories of what he went through, I was in awe. I honestly don’t think I could have done it. I would have either broken down, as some of the cadets did, or I would have gotten very defensive … Continue reading

Activities for a Happy Baby: Your Face

As parents, we live for those moment when our babies are experiencing pure happiness. We look forward to those moments when there is no hungry cry or wet cry or fussy cry, but just that happy lopsided smile that tells you that everything is okay. One of the main things that makes your baby happy doesn’t cost a thing or require much effort. You carry it wherever you go, and you can’t easily lose it. It is your face. As humans, we are hardwired to recognize an appreciate faces. In fact, research shows that a good portion of a baby’s … Continue reading

New Rule Closes the Loophole with the “Do Not Call List”

Don’t you hate it when unwanted telemarketing messages invade your home? We get at least two or three a week. Funny, because I thought being on the official “Do Not Call” list would eliminate unwanted telemarketing calls. The calls are even more annoying when they come prerecorded. They are also known as “robocalls.” As anyone who has heard it knows, I have been cursed or blessed with a naturally very soft-spoken voice that doesn’t usually get picked up clearly by answering machines or voice recognition systems unless I remember to actively project it. (I have this same problem talking on … Continue reading
