Impact of Texting on Grammar

If school hasn’t already started for your child, it is just around the corner for others. Did your child spend any time brushing up on their math skills this summer? How about their grammar? Well if your tween is a regular texter, their grammar skills might be lacking. A new study recently came out that found tweens who use shorthand (also known as tech speak) when texting, are more likely to use improper English, compared to those who don’t text. Let me give you an example of a message that might be sent… R u goin 2 b round ltr … Continue reading

What Have You Learned About Money for Your Next Partnership?

Yesterday, I wrote about the importance of brushing up on one’s math skills and mastering some basic math and financing skills as a single parent. Since money is such a big issue for many of us and it becomes an even bigger issue in many marriages and partnerships, I thought it would be beneficial to talk about what we have learned from our past relationships and mistakes and ask whether or not you think you have learned anything that you will take with you into your next partnership? In reality, we humans often do not learn from the things we … Continue reading

Math Skills for a Single Parent

Strangely enough, I think I use more math in my every day life as a single parent than I did when I was partnered. Even though I paid most of the bills when there were two of us, we also had two incomes and two people spending money. As a single parent, I have become completely independent with my finances, but I have also had to learn about investing, retirement and as a small business owner, there has been a boost in the need for math there. I truly believe that every single parent needs to make sure that he … Continue reading

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers

I do not particularly like Math. In fact, when I finished my bachelor’s degree, I did everything I could to avoid taking a single math class, or a science class that required much math. I am just not keen on having to work with numbers. Now, as all of you other home business owners out there know–there is just no way to run your own business, without having to do some work with numbers. Even if we cannot stand math and don’t consider numbers to be our friends, we do have to learn some basic bookkeeping, money management and for … Continue reading

What Skills Do You Need to Succeed? And, Where Can You Get Them?

I think many of us are tempted to look at the skills we already have and think that is the end of the line. We evaluate our existing skills in terms of what we can bring to our home business and then assume that whatever is missing will stay missing. But, it can be beneficial to take a good look at what sort of skills are required for your business or industry—especially in order to be competitive and successful—and then figure out what is lacking and how you can develop those skills to be even more successful. Different jobs and … Continue reading

It’s Never Too Late To Take a Computer Class

I know, you meant to take that class on spreadsheets five years ago. And what about Powerpoint? Yeah, it seems everyone knows how to do those pesky presentations but you. Just because you haven’t caught up in the technology department for your home business doesn’t mean it’s too late. There are still plenty of classes, courses, and workshops to be found that are geared toward helping the beginner, or the almost-beginner learn those neglected computer skills and programs. In my town, our community college is an ideal resource for computer classes geared towards the small business owner. There are dozens … Continue reading

Do You Need to Brush Up on Your Math Skills?

I have been able to get by for most of my career with the most basic of math skills. But, with the advent of starting my own small business, not only did I need to re-learn some math techniques, but I needed to brush up on some basic accounting and geometry as well! I am of the opinion that math is NOT like riding a bicycle. If you don’t use all those formulas and skills you learned in high school and college math classes, I think they do just fall out of one’s head—especially for a non-mathematically inclined English major … Continue reading

Forgetting to Remember: Part 1

Does your child forget easily? Do you have to repeat instructions or remind your child on a regular basis? Many learning disabled kids have the symptom of poor memory. Daniel, our youngest, falls in this category. The old saying, “You’d lose your head if it wasn’t screwed on”, pretty much describes his ability to remember things. We have a weekly chart to help him remember his daily chores, including tooth brushing and flossing, walking the dog, emptying the trash, etc. I strategically place post-it reminders in areas to help him remember to do whatever he needs to on a given … Continue reading

How to Listen to Your Child

How to listen? Don’t we all listen to our children whine, groan, complain, argue, giggle, squeal, and pretend all day long? Yes, of course. But there’s a difference between hearing and listening. And often we parents need to be reminded what listening really means. We sometimes wonder why our children don’t confide in us or why we feel disconnected with them. Improving our listening skills can create stronger bonds and build trust between us and our kids. In conjunction with my previous blog, “Brother for Sale.” Helping Kids Cope with their Sibling’s Disability, I’ve tried to present ways that we … Continue reading
