Entrepreneurs Have a Healthy Dose of Optimism

I do not know for sure if people who start their own businesses are more optimistic than the average population, it is just a hunch of mine. I think it takes the ability to override all the skeptics and nay-sayers, not to mention all the reasons why you SHOULD NOT start a business, to take the leap and start one anyway. Add to that the fact that many entrepreneurs try one or two times, and overcome failing business ventures before they land on something that works, and I think we are a pretty optimistic bunch!

I think that home business entrepreneurs understand that we really do learn from our mistakes and if we don't stay positive and just assume that if we work hard and smart enough, everything will work out--then what is the point of taking all this risk? When I think over all the small and home business owners I have met--from people who have built thriving mid-sized businesses, to those who are just starting out, to those who work part-time in a traditional job while working on their home business endeavors--the one thing I think everyone has in common is a basic level of optimism. We just like to think that things will work eventually. And, if they don't, we'll just pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and try again.

I don't mean to imply that those glass-half-empty people can't and don't start small businesses--but it has been my experience and it is my opinion, that optimism and the ability to get excited about the possibilities of the future seem to go hand-in-hand with taking the risks and working to build a business. After all, why would we do all this, with all we have got at stake, if we didn't think and hope it would all work out for the best?
