Fantasizing About a Summer Vacation

My teenagers get to take an entire three months off. Last week, I had lunch with an old friend and former coworker of mine who is retired and now plans weeks and months of vacations. While I "get" that I am not at either stage in my personal development right now-what I wouldn't give for an entire summer vacation!

I certainly do not want to come off as a whiner-that is not what I am doing here this morning. It is really more of a fantasizing-thinking and yearning for those good old days when summer stretched out before me-week after week of leisure and pleasure and projects of my own choosing. Of course, I'm sure there were lists of chores left by my parents, social drama to maneuver, and summer jobs to accomplish, but it still didn't seem like the endless obligation of adulthood.

I suppose there are plenty of teachers and students and non-working adults who are able to experience at least a smidge of the joy of a long summer vacation. I hope it is not something they take for granted and that they have some idea of how fabulous and special the summer vacation from work and business actually is. Not to mention how envious someone like me can get! As I was told last week, my day will come, and I may some day have long stretches of summer vacation again. Meanwhile, of course, my teenagers have no idea what they will be giving up when they finally take on the realities of adulthood.

So, as I open my desk on a Monday morning in June-take out paper, open e-mail, look over the budget one more time-I can't help but fantasize about putting it all in a box not to be opened until September, and taking a tall glass of lemonade out to lounge by the pool and talk on the phone with my friends...
