Lights Out? Work On!

As I sit here writing this evening’s blog posts, the lights in the living room are flickering. With each flicker, I wonder whether that is the moment in which we will lose our electricity to Hurricane Sandy. Since I am in Vermont, there is still plenty of time before the storm passes, so losing power is well within the range of possibilities. In fact, I went through my day today with the notion that it’s not a matter of if the power goes out, but when. After Hurricane Irene struck Vermont last year, we were without electricity for about ten … Continue reading

Freelance Work Is Going Strong

Today, I read the latest newsletter from my favorite place for finding online freelance writing work – Elance. The newsletter had interesting information about the current state of freelance employment, and the news is encouraging especially considering the dismal state of employment in general. Freelance business is booming and, in total, Elance contractors earned 43 million dollars in the first quarter of financial year 2012 – the strongest quarterly earnings to date. What are these contractors doing to earn all of that money? The skills that were in highest demand during the first quarter of 2012 were information technology and … Continue reading

Online Freelance Work is Going Strong

As a home-based professional who does freelance work online, I am very much interested in how other online freelance workers are doing in the down economy. Today, I took a look at a report on online freelance work which was put out by Elance, a web site where freelance professionals of all kinds can bid on and work on jobs for clients around the world. The report focuses on what has been happening for online freelancers during the second quarter of fiscal year 2011. I am happy to say that things look good for online workers across the broad spectrum … Continue reading

Can You Afford to Go Back to Work?

Many of you know that I’m a stay at home mom. Freelance writing (and blogging here) is our second income and while it doesn’t pay as much as I got paid while I was working, it pays enough to pay for our kids’ classes and curriculum materials for homeschooling. I also understand that many women choose to go back to work after a baby because they don’t want to lose their position in their career. But I often hear women talk about how they have to go to work because they simply need the second income. With that said, this … Continue reading

Working From Home: You’re Not Really Working, Right?

This past weekend, I got to go to my sister’s house and spend the weekend with her and her family. I had a ton of fun, and I kept thinking, “I’m so glad I have a flexible job that allows me to do this.” I had post-dated blogs so that this blog would be kept current while I was gone, I finished up the other freelance work that I had to do, and in the end was able to take four days off in a row without touching work even once. It was a great feeling. As I was leaving, … Continue reading

Reason #173 to Love Working at Home

As many of you already know, I quit my bricks and mortar job, Friday being my last day there. This morning my husband woke me up on accident as he rolled out of bed just before 7:00. I have never been described as an early bird, and when I was working at that last job, my poor husband used to have to work really hard just to get me to roll over and acknowledge his presence. I hated getting up, and I used to whine and sniffle until Doug would give in and give me a back rub. When he … Continue reading

Employer Based Health Insurance is Disappearing

A report done by Iowa Policy Project, which is a non-profit group, shows that it has become more difficult for people to find employer sponsored health insurance. There are a number of factors that are contributing to this situation. The report also found that many consumers are confused about their own health insurance coverage. Internet Malfunctions Do Not Have To Ruin Your Day

For home-based professionals who work online or use the internet to submit their work to clients, a reliable internet connection is an essential piece of business equipment. However, internet connections can and do fail to work properly from time to time. Sometimes, there is nothing that you can do to get through an internet outage except for finding things that you can do offline until connectivity is restored. Even though it may be a bit upsetting at first to have to set the work that you had planned on doing aside because you cannot get online, the very act of … Continue reading
