Thankful To Work From Home

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I feel that it is important that I share how grateful I am that I work from home. Owning my two part time home – based businesses has enabled me to do something that I always knew that I wanted to do – stay home with my kids. While my husband and I have made and continue to make many adjustments and sacrifices along the way to ensure that only one of us works outside of the home, I would not trade my current lifestyle for that which I could have if I were employed … Continue reading

Mixing Business With Travel

One of the great things about having your own home – based business or businesses is that you get to decide how much vacation time you get, and when you can take it. While you may not be able to pay yourself for vacation days that you take, you may still be able to make money while you are on vacation by working a little bit during your trip. The bottom line is, how you approach balancing travel and work is completely up to you. In just a few days, I will be leaving with my family for a road … Continue reading

Setting An Example For Your Children

One thing that work at home parents may not think about very often is the example that they set for their children. Whether you have started your own home – based business or you have a job where you work from home, your children are learning from your example. This is a very good thing. I grew up in a home where my dad worked outside of the home and my mom stayed home to raise my sister and I. As a child, I certainly enjoyed having a parent taking care of me at home. As I grew older, I … Continue reading

Thankful…Even If I am Working the Day after Thanksgiving

Yes, it’s the day after Thanksgiving and I am working. I don’t get to stand in a long line, waiting for door buster savings at my favorite stores…no Black Friday shopping for me. I didn’t get to sleep in very late. In fact, this week doesn’t feel much different than most weeks. The only way I was able to “take off” yesterday for Thanksgiving was to plan my work so that I would end up spending some of my Saturday doing it. Now don’t get me wrong…I am not trying to get sympathy. Would I rather be enjoying the day … Continue reading

Working on Thanksgiving – Just a Tiny Bit

There are ten more minutes left of Thanksgiving, so technically I am working on Thanksgiving albeit just a little bit. We hosted Thanksgiving, so even though I had done quite a bit of food preparation and cleaning yesterday there was a lot more to be taken care of today. Fortunately, I had the foresight to take that into account when planning my work schedule. I decided that one hour today (thanks to the odd hours I keep it is really more like early Friday morning) would be a reasonable amount of work to do. As I sit here still stuffed … Continue reading

I’m Grateful

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Today is a day to be grateful so I’m going to stop and count my blessings. It’s so easy to get caught up in the cycle of kicking the dirt because of all you don’t have as a single parent, it’s time to be thankful for what we do have. I’m thankful first and foremost for the opportunity to be Hailey’s mother, whether married or single, being her mother is the single best thing that has ever happened to me. I’m especially thankful that my daughter and I are both healthy. It’s easy to take our health … Continue reading

Giving Thanks for My Home Based Businesses

Tomorrow is my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. I love the idea of dedicating an entire day to reflecting on things that we are thankful for and spending time with loved ones. In fact, one of the things that I enjoy the most about it is that the arrival of Thanksgiving gets people in a grateful and appreciative mood before the actual holiday as well as during and after it. Today, I would like to join my fellow bloggers Richele McFarlin and Stephanie Romero in expressing thanks for my home based businesses. My two home based businesses have given me the freedom … Continue reading

Thoughts on Working on Labor Day

Today I noticed that one of my fellow bloggers, Richele McFarlin, wrote about the topic of Labor Day. I’ll be working a little bit this Labor Day just like Richelle, and I am sure that we won’t be the only home-based professionals spending at least some of the day working. I really do not mind working on Labor Day because there are no family barbecues, parties, or other events beckoning to me to come away from my desk. If there were, it might be a little harder to stay on task. The main reason that I will be working on … Continue reading

The Cost of Homeschooling

First of all let me apologize for the lack of blogs in home schooling this week. Suffice it to say that five children with a stomach virus leaves little time for anything besides laundry. But that’s enough about that! Awhile ago someone asked me how much home schooling costs. The answer to that is varied and there are several factors that influence how much a family spends. I know families that spend next to nothing, those that spend a small fortune and those that are somewhere in the middle. I will break down for you some of our expenses in … Continue reading

November is National Adoption Awareness Month.

Every year in the United States, the month of November is set aside to promote awareness about the adoption of children from the foster care system. National Adoption Month, has been celebrated for over 20-years and started in May 1976, when Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis issued the first state Adoption Week proclamation. Later in the same year 1976 President Gerald Ford officially proclaimed National Adoption week by way of a letter to the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC) conference. During the following years, Adoption Week was observed during the week of Thanksgiving in November. In 1986, NACAC coordinated … Continue reading
