Home Business: Gift Baskets

Making and selling gift baskets can be a lucrative home business and the start up is simpler and less costly than many other options.

You should be able to charge enough to double the cost of your materials when you make up gift baskets. Just make sure that your baskets are worth the price. Many gift baskets are far too pricey for what is included. They are pretty, but they are overstuffed with filler rather than being filled useful or enjoyable items.

You will need some filler to tuck into spaces between gift items. It helps make the basket look fuller and more attractive and it helps keep items from falling over or moving around. Just don't overdo the filler. Make sure your customers know they will get a good value when they purchase from you.

Make your baskets unique from those you see elsewhere. Shop for unusual items; don't be predictable. Concentrating on custom baskets may be a good niche. Ask your customers questions about the person they are purchasing a gift basket for and include thoughtful items that will be special to that person. If your customer's son loves baseball, items such as baseball cards are a good choice. If the recipient loves to cook, unusual kitchen gadgets are a fun idea.

The basket itself should also be high quality and attractive as should the packaging. For a truly original flair, take a basket making class and design your own baskets.

For packaging, colored cellophane is an excellent choice. Tulle will also work and it makes an attractive package when accented with satin ribbon or raffia.

You can usually find discounts if you buy supplies in volume and don't forget to look for sales and check out discount outlets. Once you get your business off the ground, you can look into wholesale options.
