Look Good On Any Budget

I love clothes. However, my wardrobe has been looking rather shabby and not at all chic for quite some time. The reason? I have not had much time or money available for clothes shopping over the past couple of years. This afternoon while I was looking through my drawers for something to wear, I realized that there are probably ways that I can freshen up my wardrobe even with a very limited budget. Sure enough, there are tons of tips online for how you can look great for less. Here are a few that I intend to try. If you … Continue reading

Improving Intimacy

I felt challenged recently to write this blog. The web content company that I work for has some new assignments for me, lifestyle articles. I am used to writing about the law, so this was a great opportunity to write about something different. When my editor was describing the content, she said, “Think Cosmopolitan.” Okay, I haven’t picked up one of those magazines in ages…probably a good 20 years. Thankfully I was able to opt out of certain topics that would make me uncomfortable but we had an interesting “discussion” via Skype on whether that magazine really holds any water. … Continue reading

One Way to Make 2012 a Good Year for Your Business

With the New Year fast approaching and the fresh start that it brings almost here, your mind may be full of ideas for improving your home – based business. One suggestion that I have for making 2012 a better year for your home –based business is to evaluate and improve your bookkeeping practices. If you just said to yourself “Bookkeeping practices? What bookkeeping practices?” than this is definitely something that it is important for you to do. While accounting and bookkeeping are normally considered part of the administrative duties that a home – based professional must make time for as … Continue reading

Improving Self Portraits

You don’t have to look far these days to view horrific self photos. Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms are home to some of the worst self portraits on Earth. Viewing photo after photo of people posing in front of mirrors that also prominently reveal the cameras they’re using to document the scene is pretty pathetic. Professional photographers will be the first to tell you that snapping a stunning self portrait takes a combination of good equipment and even better timing. While they may look like a snap to take, exceptional self shots are an art that requires practice … Continue reading

Improving the Reputation of “Bad” Veggies

You’ve heard the whispers. Carrots are all sugar. Iceberg lettuce is nothing more than crunchy water, nutritionally speaking. But are these bad vegetables all bad? Even veggies that don’t make the A-list of superfoods aren’t worthless. Iceberg lettuce does have lots of water… but it also has important nutrients like vitamin A (which helps protect your eyes) and vitamin K (which can help protect your bones). Nutritional experts also point out that it’s better to eat iceberg lettuce than no lettuce at all. Celery is another veggie that gets a bad rap because of all the water involved. This vegetable … Continue reading

Politics Blog Week in Review June 22

The week in review is our way at Families.com of letting you know what you’ve missed this week. Of course you can also hit the ‘subscription button to the right and subscribe to this blog so you don’t miss a thing! June 16—Obama and McCain on the Economy As both political candidates begin to spar over key issues in this election, I took some time to outline their differing views on the economy and more specifically taxes. In short, McCain favors a tax break–especially on things like gas. Obama favors raising taxes for those with more money while reducing taxes … Continue reading

Little Things Mean a Lot

Yesterday we looked at how encouraging words can boost spirits. I hope you’ve been trying it in your life. Our minister was on vacation last week, so one of the men of our congregation gave the sermon on Sunday. His talk was practical and biblical. On the way out of church several people thanked him for the message and the time he devoted to preparing it. Having in the past been used to doing a weekly 40 minute lecture for a bible study group, I’m well aware how much preparation is involved in such a talk. On the other hand … Continue reading

Are Your Pictures That Good?

Have you ever taken a picture that was so stunningly gorgeous that you seriously thought of sharing it with the world… for a price? More and more amateur photographers (many of whom have thought of going pro, but circumstances keep them from doing so) are turning to the Internet to make money off their shots. The most popular online venues that pay for great pics are Micro Stock Photography websites. Microstock photography is an offshoot of traditional stock photography, which basically sells photos at deep discounts. The set up is simple: Clients license stock photos for a dollar or two, … Continue reading

They May Not Hear Anything After the First Sentence

The truth with parenting (as with other relationships, I think) is that communication can be major. So much so, in fact, that I think if we master some basic, important communication skills it can go a long way in helping us establish strong relationships and bonds with our children, and help us get through some pretty sticky parent-child situations. One thing that I have learned is that if I have something important to say I should say it simply and quickly. My kids might turn in for the first sentence, but then they are very likely to just tune me … Continue reading

I Say One Thing, But They Hear Another

No matter how much I work on communication in my parenting, sometimes one of my children and I get our wires crossed. There are just those times when I hear myself saying one thing; think I am being clear, transparent and obvious–and they hear something completely different! The next thing I know, I am trying to explain myself and defend what I thought I was saying and we’ve entered some sort of twilight zone of miscommunication! Here is a perfect example: My daughter came downstairs in the midst of preparing to go to a costume party. She said to me: … Continue reading
