Is Working at Home Your Dream?

Maybe you have always dreamed of working at home, but you really don't know how to approach your spouse about it. Will he or she think that it's a bad idea?

You might start by casually mentioning the concept, but the best way to approach people when it comes to life altering decisions that also affect them, is to come to the table prepared. Do your homework. Research the home business you'd like to start and make a list of pros and cons. While you might be tempted to only list the positive points, the other person is likely to see any negative aspects first, so it pays to address those points as well.

Ask yourself these and other tough questions and develop suitable answers:

1) Can I afford to quit my job at this time to start a home business?

2) If not, how can I transition from one to the other as painlessly as possible?

3) How much money can I realistically expect to make each month?

4) How much start up money do I need?

5) In what ways will this new business affect my home and my family?

6) How will my spouse and children support me in this effort?

7) Am I honestly self-motivated enough to take on a home business?

8) What will I do if the business doesn't work out as planned?

9) (If joining a company) what do I know about the company that offers this opportunity?

10) What does the Better Business Bureau say about the company?

This is a short list, and you will certainly need to answer other questions. You know how your spouse thinks, so try to be ready with answers before he or she asks a question. Also, be realistic and be honest with yourself. Many new businesses fail because people get caught up in the dream and have unrealistic expectations. You don't want to be one of them.

Best wishes!

Good information. I have worked from home since 1999. I would add that it is not easy to find work from home and one should take working from home serious, too many people think it's really not working. They think you are just sitting at home and they call and chat with you anytime.

So true, Erika! This is covered in some upcoming articles.
