Put Kids to Work

My parents were huge proponents of the idiom:  “Idle hands are the devil’s playthings.” In other words, my mom and dad hated seeing their offspring sit around when there was work to be done.  And when you’re living in a home occupied by six people, there’s never a shortage of tasks to be completed. For me, summer meant tennis camp, swimming lessons and plenty of chores.  In my dad’s eyes, no job was too dirty for his little girl.  Looking back, I don’t begrudge my father for keeping me and my brothers busy during the dog days of summer.  In … Continue reading

Homemade Oxygen Cleaner

With three children, laundry is always a challenge. First there is the hunting through the house for stray socks, finding wet towels wherever they land, and digging through the bottom of the hall closet for dusty jackets and sweatshirts that fell from the hangers. After the laundry is gathered and sorted, anything with a stain needs to be addressed, which probably accounts for at least a third of the children’s clothing in any given week. I have my arsenal of tools. The stain pre-treaters, the better powdered detergent I swear by, the utility sink for soaking. One tool that works … Continue reading

Home Sweet Home

This past Monday I came back to my home in Wisconsin after a trip to Texas. My family went to see my 18-year-old son’s graduation from basic training with the Air Force. The eight weeks he was gone seemed to stretch on forever. But in the days leading up to the trip, I had so much on my mind in the way of packing and planning, that it diverted my thoughts at least somewhat. One of the goals that I had for this trip was to come back home to a clean house. I didn’t want to leave it in … Continue reading

You Just Never Know

It has been one of “those” mornings. My youngest son woke up late and put the rest of the family behind. When we should have been walking out the door, same child was trying to quick finish something for school. Because we left later, there was much more traffic at the school to deal with. That meant more opportunities to be cut off, passed or to wait in the very long drop off line. Needless to say this also resulted in my day getting set back. You would think my mood would be sour. Normally my daughter would have been … Continue reading

Does a Messy Home Mean Happier Kids?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about having a more peaceful home. Not too long ago I wrote about how I am trying to NOT yell at my kids in the article, The Voice of Domestic Peace. Part of working on that goal is working on eliminating stress from my life. There is a direct correlation between stress in my life, and how often I raise my voice at my kids. I want it to stop. Unfortunately, like the rest of the world, there are a lot of things that cause me stress. It is in my genetics to have … Continue reading

Humility Starts at Home

When was the last time you asked for help? For some parents, putting pride aside to ask for or simply accept help is out of the question. What kind of message does this send the children of these moms and dads? Regardless of how much you may despise humbling yourself, the fact is everyone needs help at some point in their lives, be it financial, physical or emotional. No one is perfect; and asking for or accepting assistance doesn’t make you a loser. It’s a lesson a college student from New Jersey is trying to teach kids and their parents, … Continue reading

Stephanie Romero wrote a great post about what it is like to write web content. If you are reading our Home Business blog or any of the other great blogs here on Families.com, you can see what kinds of things people write when they work as professional bloggers. There are many, many other types of writing assignments that are available online. If … Continue reading

Is Your Home Entertainment Ready?

So my husband and I have been trying to decide what to do about our oldest son’s high school graduation, which is less than a month away. The only reason we have procrastinated is because we had been hoping to hear a date on when he will leave for the Air Force. Our plans have been to combine his graduation party with his going away party. In fact, a couple of months ago our intentions were to work on areas of the home that we felt needed some sprucing up before having a big party. But as time kept passing … Continue reading
