Intentional about Learning More

The year 2012 I plan on being intentional about learning more. I always admire adults who go back to school or otherwise continue their learning. I was in my late 30’s when I took some online courses, some related to childcare and others were general (such as economics). It felt so good to be learning even later in life. This past summer I had an opportunity to learn more about my field of writing by attending a writing conference in another state. It served as a way to sharpen my skills. Learning more about your field will help grow both … Continue reading

Learning to Say No

I typically don’t have a problem saying no to people. I guess that’s because I am a pretty organized, detailed person who likes plans, schedules and routines. So if something is going to distract me from what I need to, I can generally say no to it. However, what I have noticed recently is that where I do struggle to say no is when something is related to my line of work. Once it gets out there that you are a professional in some field, you may suddenly find others in need of advice or help. This has happened to … Continue reading

Learning in the Age of Distraction

Your children are learning in the Age of Distraction. Around them are all sorts of media avenues, things like e-readers and Iphones and email and text messages. There are also more arcane and ancient technologies like computer games and the television. Not only do these technologies lead to a lot of screen time, but they can be profoundly distracting. The phone goes beep, the email pops up, and all of a sudden the kids are off. Now, I think that these technologies are amazing. Kids can learn a lot from the world of the web, and they can be participants … Continue reading

Be Professional in Your Home-Based Business

If you want to be taken seriously in your home business it’s important that you maintain a level of professionalism. This can be difficult when you are not working outside the home. It can be easy to grasp onto a casual look and attitude from within the four walls of your home. I made the joke to my husband last Friday that it was going to be casual Friday at my job. I had on my Green Bay Packer’s shirt in celebration of their playoff game victory. But I really did take my casual Friday seriously because the majority of … Continue reading

Keep Learning about Your Field

If you are looking for ways to increase sales potential or boost your home business in some way, then you should probably spend time learning more about the nature and skills of your home-based business. No matter what your business is, how long you have been doing it or how much education you have; there is always more to be learned. Industries and technology change so it’s important that you are keeping on top of those changes. Using my work as a freelance writer for example, I try to brush up on my writing skills by investing in books that … Continue reading

Lifelong Learning

Some people are lifelong students. They are always willing to learn something new. They’re always seeking something new to devote their time and mind to (the talent may come later). One of my favorite stories are of the elderly learning computers. All of the sudden they are able to communicate instantly with family and friends (possibly even by video) because of the amazing technological advances in recent years. Learning is a valueable thing and the desire to learn is strong in certain people. I used to wonder why math is important and now I use math every day (as an … Continue reading

Square Foot Field Trip – Backyard Exploring

Home schooling is, in my opinion, the best type of schooling there is. You can be certain your children are learning skills that are important for life such as filling out job applications, balancing checkbooks, cooking, frugal spending, and more. This is in addition to the typical education of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. But staying at home all the time can get boring for kids and parents. Field trips are excellent ways to get out of the house for awhile and incorporate fun with learning. But what if you’re simply too tired to drag the kids to a museum, library, … Continue reading

Starting a Business in Your Line of Work (or Trying Something New)

Figuring out what your home business is going to be all about can come easily for some of us, but for others, we might spend years just trying to sort out what we think we ought to be doing, what we’re good at, and what we actually want to do. One of the big questions is whether to start a home business in a field that you already work in and have experience in, or do you go after something you’ve always wanted to do or head into a brand new field? The pros of starting a business doing something … Continue reading

The Process of Learning to Trust Again

Many of us have found our way to single parenthood by walking through a minefield of betrayed and battered trust issues. On the road to becoming so independent and self-sufficient, we may have “learned” that we really cannot trust anyone else. In our determination to be dependable and responsible in taking care of our child or children, we may have told ourselves that we really cannot trust anyone else. One of the challenges of rebuilding a life as a single parent is to learn how to grow from this place, and start the process of learning to trust again. I … Continue reading
