Get Into the Holiday Spirit Without Breaking the Bank

Last Friday, a Christmas tree lot opened up across the street from our church. Who buys a Christmas tree a week before Thanksgiving? It was much easier to denounce the premature holiday madness in October when Wal-Mart and Target were selling Christmas wreaths next to the Halloween candy, but now that Thanksgiving is just a few days away, I suppose it’s time to make merry. One of the cheapest ways to get into the holiday spirit is to hit the road and soak in the spectacular Christmas light displays… that you didn’t have to erect. Some of the nation’s most … Continue reading

Family Road Trip Highlights And Low Points

Tonight is our last night in the beach house here in Palm Coast, Florida. Tomorrow we will be embarking on our journey back to Vermont. So far, the trip has been fun. It has been tons of fun at times, and loads of stress at others. Of course, these things are par for the course when you take a family road trip. There have been some wonderful moments during this vacation. Yesterday was very special, as it was my sister’s wedding day. The boys both had a good day behavior – wise and things went smoothly. From spending time with … Continue reading

Lights Out? Work On!

As I sit here writing this evening’s blog posts, the lights in the living room are flickering. With each flicker, I wonder whether that is the moment in which we will lose our electricity to Hurricane Sandy. Since I am in Vermont, there is still plenty of time before the storm passes, so losing power is well within the range of possibilities. In fact, I went through my day today with the notion that it’s not a matter of if the power goes out, but when. After Hurricane Irene struck Vermont last year, we were without electricity for about ten … Continue reading

Disney Park Secrets: Working the Front Gate

Any Disney fan has wondered this at some point in his or her life: what would it be like to work at Disney? Be it for the movie division, at the parks, as an Imagineer, or even just in a Disney store, surrounded by the characters we grew up with, we’ve probably all thought about it at some point. So it’s fun to hear about what it could be like to work at the Happiest Place on Earth (or its East Coast sibling). Internet news/interest site Reddit has a feature called “Ask Me Anything,” wherein people, anyone from “Avengers” director … Continue reading

Tropical Layouts

With so many people heading south for spring break, now is the time to stock up on tropical-themed scrapbook embellishments. Even if you are not planning a spring fling to the Caribbean, Hawaii or Mexico this year you can save the materials to use on a summer beach-themed layout or a page design for honeymooning friends. Since we visit my parents in Hawaii twice a year, I typically purchase a bunch of unique local Hawaiian scrapbooking supplies in the Islands rather than stocking up online or in shops here in Wisconsin. However, if you prefer to choose from the myriad … Continue reading

All About the Edit

Do you over edit your photos? One of the advantages of digital photography is the capability to alter and improve the overall look of your pictures. Photo editing software allows amateur shutterbugs access to tools designed to crop, eliminate red-eye, reduce shadows, manipulate brightness, and much more. However, there are times when I have gone overboard in the editing department and ended up with an image that was far worse than the original I was trying to fix. Whether you are resizing, adding highlights, adjusting contrast and saturation or working with different tones, it’s best to preview the image before … Continue reading

Fraud Dog – A Reality Show About Insurance Fraud

It seems that just about any concept can become the focus of a reality TV series. A new show called “Fraud Dog” is currently in pilot production. The show will be about insurance fraud, and will be presented in a format similar to the “America’s Most Wanted” TV series. I suppose that if you intended to make a television show about insurance, focusing on insurance fraud might be the only way to make that show interesting to viewers. This is the second show I’ve heard of that is attempting to do that, but it is the only one that takes … Continue reading

Clean Out Your Cleaning Supplies

Part of housekeeping is making sure that your house is in order but if your cleaning supplies aren’t, then you just might be wasting space. Think of the number of products and tools you have bought over the years in order to make your job of cleaning easier or more efficient. Do you still use all of them? It’s a good idea to go through your cleaning supplies, products and tools to decide which ones are worth keeping. For instance, despite the fact that my house is 95% hardwood floors, I still keep a vacuum cleaner around. All that does … Continue reading
