Keep a Sick Child at Home!

Each year of teaching never seems to amaze me. Every year I am completely flabbergasted by the things that some parents will say or do. However, I suppose that I must back up a bit and admit that I do not yet have a child in school. For I may just as well be one of those crazy parents when mine are in school! Parents send all types of odd notes or items to school with their children. We actually had one child bring in two pumpkins, and not during Halloween. She simply stated that her mother told her to … Continue reading

What Do Our Businesses Teach Our Kids About Work?

I like to think that my home business is modeling some really great things for my kids. Of course, they often wish that I had a “real” job or something that looked more like many of their friends. But, they’ve also grown so used to my flexibility and availability that they take my presence for granted. If I worked a hard-driving 60-hour a week job, they might not have absorbed the same sorts of things about work that they have from being around my home-based business. I’m hoping that my children are learning work ethic and the realities of how … Continue reading

A Type II Diabetes Journey: When You’re Sick

I’ve been sick all week. Not with the sniffles or a mild cold, but with a knock-you-off-your-feet, scramble-your-brain-in-pain virus. It happens once a year. The virus rips through the Northwest, depleting workers’ sick time, lowering attendance at school significantly, and driving some to their doctor’s offices. If I weren’t relegated to “Dr. Duty” in the military healthcare system, I probably would’ve gone in, even if it were just for some pain relief. Instead, I sit here with my Theraflu Severe Cold Formula and my quilt wrapped around me. They offer some comfort, especially the heavy quilt. In a week where … Continue reading

Boo-Boo Peas

My little girl has not been sick for a while. It has been at least six months since we have been to the doctor’s office for anything but a well visit. You may be thinking, “Oh no! Why did he just type that?” To have you know, I consider my last sentence a reverse jinx – thus extending her healthy stretch! But I’m knocking on all the wood I can find just to be safe. Her dolls and bears, however, have not been so fortunate lately. They have been suffering from a variety of ailments: stomach bug, headache, bizarre mishaps, … Continue reading

Two Decades of Trips to the Pediatrician/Family Doctor

When I look back over my years of parenthood, one of the duties or tasks that weaves all the years together is all the trips to the pediatrician or, now, family doctor. There have been illnesses and immunization shots, sports physicals, warts that needed to be removed, stitches, and various other ailments and concerns that warranted a trip to the doctor. As a matter of fact, when my children were all preschoolers, I tried to convince our laid-back pediatrician, Dr. Cindy, to sell me that pink liquid antibiotic in gallon jugs! Well, with teenagers, the trips to the doctor are … Continue reading

Does My Work-at-Home Business Spoil My Children?

Today is Saturday. The day where most of people take a break. Not me. Today is my busiest day. I write articles, ship Ebay items, place orders and market my websites. I have two preschoolers so during the rest of the week I work while they are sleeping at night or napping. (Perhaps you’ve wondered about my night-owl posts). I give my kids six days of “mommy-time” and therefore I am not afraid to admit that I feed my kids cold cereal and prop them in front of the television on Saturday mornings. As I was packaging some Ebay products … Continue reading
