Moving On from Disappointment

If you have not suffered disappointment in your home business, then you have not been in business very long—it is inevitable that things will go awry or you will put a bunch of energy into something in your business that just does not work out. We cannot avoid disappointment, but we can decide how much we will let it affect us and we can learn how to take the experience for what it is and move on… I am not advocating that we try to ignore or overlook those disappointments that come our way in our home businesses—I really do … Continue reading

The Long-Awaited Vet Visit

Yesterday I took Chrestomanci to the vet. I’d been looking forward to this for a couple reasons: one, for advice about all the feeding/misbehaving issues, and two, to compare vets. The visit was disappointing in many ways, but at least it cleared up one issue for me. First I’ll explain what issue it cleared up. I take Chihiro and Cole to a vet that’s five minutes from our old apartment, but closer to twenty-five minutes from our house. I’ve had really good experiences there. But I also have heard a lot about another veterinarian in the county, both through personal … Continue reading

Let’s Play! How to Bond with Your New Stepfamily

Not being much of a bowler myself, I was a little surprised when my then-boyfriend suggested that he take my daughter out for a few frames one Saturday afternoon. It was one of the first weekends I had invited him to visit when my daughter wasn’t with her Dad. (After many years of single parenthood, I continued to be very wary of involving her in my romantic liaisons when I wasn’t yet sure where they were headed). This weekend had been discussed between us at length; our relationship had become serious, and we were starting to talk about a future … Continue reading

The Big One

When it comes to young kids and Christmas presents, bigger is ALWAYS better. Just ask my 6-year-old daughter. The girl begged, whined and wished upon about three dozen stars (from Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve) in an effort to get Santa, mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, ANYONE! to gift her with KOTA My Triceratops Dinosaur last Christmas. The garganteous interactive riding toy was only dwarfed by his colossal price tag. At $400 there was no way KOTA was going to take up space in our home unless he planned to pay rent or help with laundry. Needless to say Christmas 2009 came … Continue reading

What If You’re Not Pregnant?

(Excuse me while I go all “philosophical” on you.) You’ve spent the last week swinging back and forth between feelings of anticipation and feelings of dread. One minute you’re looking at baby shoes with a heart full of hope; the next minute you’re gripped with disappointment, trying to convince yourself you are not pregnant so you don’t get your hopes up. The truth is, in your mind, you are neither pregnant nor not pregnant. You are in limbo; you simply don’t know. You are aware that limbo cannot exist when it comes to pregnancy, but you are too uncomfortable with … Continue reading

Author Interview – Karen Salmansohn

Today we are joined by Karen Salmansohn, author of the new book “Bounce Back,” a self-help book to help those of us who have experienced difficult trials to find their way back out into the sunshine. Karen, thank you for joining me today. What would you say are some of the most common setbacks people face? I call “setbacks going through “The Vortex.” And it seems everyone has one in their life (at least one)–a time when you are tested in seemingly insurmountable ways and things continue to go wrong, and you find yourself spiraling downward. Some people’s Vortex happen … Continue reading

Behind the Scenes at the Miss USA Pageant

You have to wonder what viewers will remember most about Friday night’s Miss USA pageant—-the fact that a 26-year-old entrepreneur from Texas named Crystle Stewart walked away with the title or that celebrity judge Heather Mills was practically booed out of the venue by audience members. Paul McCartney’s ex-wife received a raucous round of boos from the Miss USA audience when she was introduced during Friday’s broadcast, though she apparently didn’t let the unfriendly welcome put a damper on her night. According to reports, the former “Dancing with the Stars” contestant showed off some fancy footwork at a pageant afterparty. … Continue reading

Should you Tell Them You’re Disappointed?

Disappointment in the realm of family life is inevitable—our children disappoint us and we disappoint them. While we want to have clear communication and model owning our feelings with our kids, it can be a little unclear whether or not we should share our disappointments with them or not… For me, the difficulty with sharing when I am disappointed in something my child has done is how to do it in a healthy way, without lying on a thick “guilt trip.” It can be hard! We need to express ourselves and we want our child to know how we feel … Continue reading

Temper Passion with Practicality

Letting passion be your guide in your home business operation can be a grand thing—for many of us, it is what gets us up in the morning and spurs us into taking chances. However, we’ve all known those individuals who are SO passionate that they forget to take reality into account. Sometimes, they are able to get by on passion and enthusiasm alone, but often they need someone to come along and do the practical stuff. As a small, one-person business, we don’t necessarily have a staff to cover for us and make sure all the details get done, so … Continue reading

When Plans Don’t Work Out

Months ago my daughter came up with the idea of us traveling to Melbourne to see Anthony Warlow in Phantom of the Opera. We had seen the show years ago in Sydney, not with Anthony Warlow but Rob Guest. Also that day my daughter had a migraine. She was only a child at the time. Now, an adult, she thought would be good if we could see the show together again. We booked our tickets, our flights to Melbourne and our accommodation. Nothing was left to chance. This was to be a mother and daughter weekend we would both remember. … Continue reading
