Mystery Shopping: What to Expect on a Restaurant Shop

Food and I have a long-standing love affair! It's why I decided against that million dollar modeling contract. Well, that and the fact that nobody offered me one. Seriously, though, I'm really appreciative when someone goes the extra mile to make a meal hearty, tasty, and beautifully presented. So restaurant shops are a natural fit for me.

We're doing two today. Oops. I scheduled both for the same day. And both for the lunch hour. There goes the diet! Or maybe not. One of the reasons I love restaurant shops is because it gives me a chance for some one-on-one time with one of the kids. I try to take a different one each time so it's a special outing. They've been mystery shopping with me since they were little, so they understand the game. They're actually really helpful since those young eyes see much better than mine. So we'll split the smallest sub at the sandwich shop, then head on over to the nice restaurant. Here are some of the things that are common to most restaurant shops:

  • Most shops require a pre-visit phone call. You'll make sure the person speaks clearly and answers within three rings.
  • How does the restaurant look from outside? Was it easy to find, and was there enough parking?
  • Were you greeted when you came in the door?
  • Did the hostess introduce your server?
  • Was your server polite, did he suggest specials, did she check ID, did she process your check quickly?
  • Was the food appetizing? Did it look good? Taste good? Did you feel it was a good value?
  • Were the restrooms clean and stocked?

Restaurant shops usually offer reimbursement of the meals plus a small fee. There are some companies that are reimbursement-only and a few that only reimburse you for part of the meal, but you can usually do almost as well at that by using a coupon. And you won't be stuck with a report. The reports for restaurants can be lengthy. The first time, it will probably take two hours to fill out. After that, figure on an hour. Even though it doesn't pay as well as some, the added value of the meal makes it worth it to me.read the mystery shopping blogs
