Roll With the Punches

I have a couple of Buddhist friends and one of the things they have taught me is that struggling and fighting with life often just makes things worse. When I read business books, there is an awful lot of war and battle talk-fighting, struggling, and defeating the competition-sometimes, learning to roll with the realities and roll with the punches is the best way to get through a challenging time in your home business.

Even the most gifted business people have tough times. Donald Trump has had a bankruptcy or two, for goodness sake. A friend of mine pointed out to me once that all sorts of "successful" business people have also had all sorts of failures. The fact that they get up, dust themselves off, and take more risks is a testimony to their ability to just roll with the punches. Some people may benefit from beginner's luck, but it is really those folks who are able to just ride out the tough times that have the most successful businesses. Pick up any biography about a successful business person and you'll see that they have had plenty of struggles and missteps along the way!

I think that we beginning entrepreneurs often expect everything to be directly cause-and-effect related AND we expect that our home businesses will progress in a steady, linear fashion. If we just do everything right, our businesses will grow, blossom, and bear fruit like a healthy tree. This definitely isn't the case and there will be plenty of bumps and bruises along the way. Some of these will be because of our mistakes, sure, but plenty will just be market changes and other things that we can't control. Learning to just roll with the punches and "bounce" will help us stay focused on building a business without getting derailed by the uncontrollable details.
