Setting An Example For Your Children

One thing that work at home parents may not think about very often is the example that they set for their children. Whether you have started your own home – based business or you have a job where you work from home, your children are learning from your example. This is a very good thing. I grew up in a home where my dad worked outside of the home and my mom stayed home to raise my sister and I. As a child, I certainly enjoyed having a parent taking care of me at home. As I grew older, I … Continue reading

Should You Keep That Professional License?

One reason that many home-based professionals work at home is so that they can fulfill the role of stay at home parent. These professionals often find or create home-based work in the same field that they were working in prior to leaving the world of traditional work. When a parent leaves the world of traditional work for the dual career of home-based work and parenting, there are always many things to think about and many decisions to make. One major decision is that of whether to keep a professional license active. If the stay at home parent holds any type … Continue reading

Another Step Towards Opening Your Home Based Business

After thinking a bit about the suggestions that I wrote about yesterday, I realized that that I should talk a little bit about the importance of doing these smaller steps close enough together so that you can build momentum that will carry you through those crazy initial days, weeks, and months after you are open for business. I would suggest that you complete one of the steps each day, or every other day. Of course, you may need to tailor that suggestion a little to your schedule but it is important that you not spread them out too much because … Continue reading

Starting Your Own Genealogy Business

If you are thinking of taking your genealogy hobby to the next level and become a professional genealogist you need to look at the entire picture. It is important that you have several years of experience doing research, and helping others with research. Many genealogist enthusiasts have this already through volunteering at the local genealogical society. It does help business to have credentials as you open your business. While it is not required many people are more comfortable hiring a genealogist that is board certified or who has a degree in genealogy. It is not difficult to do both of … Continue reading

Bodyworks: Physically Calming Yourself

Yesterday, we took a look at how anger works in the body — what it does to your hormones, your body language, your heart rate, and more. Anger isn’t just a mental state; it has an impact on the whole body. Calming down can be a whole body process, too. The instinctive reaction to anger is aggression. Anger is one way the body and mind respond to threats — like yesterday’s example of the reckless driver. If someone cuts you off in traffic, you may get mad because they have endangered your life. Maybe that anger makes you drive a … Continue reading

Are Your Pictures That Good?

Have you ever taken a picture that was so stunningly gorgeous that you seriously thought of sharing it with the world… for a price? More and more amateur photographers (many of whom have thought of going pro, but circumstances keep them from doing so) are turning to the Internet to make money off their shots. The most popular online venues that pay for great pics are Micro Stock Photography websites. Microstock photography is an offshoot of traditional stock photography, which basically sells photos at deep discounts. The set up is simple: Clients license stock photos for a dollar or two, … Continue reading

Keeping Up With Continuing Education Requirements

If you are in a business or work as a consultant in a field where you need to be licensed or certified (or are working toward any sort of licensing or certification), then you will likely need to take some continuing education credits on a periodic basis. More and more conferences and workshops are offering continuing education credits, but it will still be up to you to find them, keep good records, and submit those records in order to obtain your continuing education credits for your profession. All sorts of professions now have continuing education requirements—many of these are the … Continue reading

Wildfire Evacuation Plan: When you have some warning.

In the last blog I wrote about the things we need to do if an evacuation is ordered and you must leave now. Sometimes, especially with wild fires, local officials may not advise an immediate evacuation but warn areas that an evacuation may happen because there’s a chance things may get worse. When you are asked to Stand By for an evacuation, consider this time valuable and take steps to protect your home and family. Protecting your house: Bring everything inside, including: Patio furniture, garbage cans, the kid’s toys, gardening equipment, hanging plants, and all the other things that may … Continue reading

Summer Grooming Tips

Today I saw this picture of a fake cat made out of the fur of the real cat it sat beside. The picture really drove it home, as if the hardwood floors I have all over my house hadn’t already: summer is here, and that means so is grooming season. I hate grooming. It’s always just such a trial in my house. But I’m cheap so I hate paying for it more, and because none of my animals do much more try to walk away a little and guilt me a lot for brushing them, I don’t have a great … Continue reading

Wash Those Hands and Paws: More Salmonella Found in Dog Food

I can’t believe I have to take to my keyboard again so soon on this issue, but here I am. More Salmonella-related recalls have been issued for dog food, and once again they’re from parent company Diamond Pet Foods. This is all just getting so confusing and ridiculous. The problem is that several brands with different names are all manufactured at the same plant, so it’s hard to keep track of what’s safe and what might be infected. Eleven different brands of pet food are all under a voluntary recall for potential Salmonella contamination. They are: Chicken Soup for the … Continue reading
