Kids and Money – What and When

One of the most valuable things that a parent can do is teach their children about money. If children are raised to understand how money works, they are likely to grow into financially aware adults who are able to make good financial decisions for themselves and their families. Of course, the big question is when to begin teaching them and what to teach them at each age and stage of their development. The earliest form of financial education for children happens without you even necessarily realizing that you are doing it. Children are very observant, and they see and hear … Continue reading

Saving Money With Photographs

Several months ago I taught a basic photography class to a group of nine scrapbookers. We went over both digital photography as well as film photography and we talked about the importance of organizing your photographs for ease of scrapbooking. Surprisingly I learned that of the nine women present that night, only four regularly printed photographs. Two ladies admitted to having several rolls of film at home that have not been developed along with hundreds of digital photographs just sitting on their computer. The other three used digital and one lady admitted to having over a thousand photographs on her … Continue reading

Ask a Homeschooling Blogger: Why Are You So Against Government Intervention? Part 4

Note: As I have explained in the first blog in this series yesterday, I have received an e-mail that I think articulates the opinions of many who do not home school and don’t understand why those of us who do might see government intervention as a bad thing. I generally ignore these letters because they are often riddled with poor language and have clearly not been thought out. For the original question in part, please see the first blog. This is a continuation of my response. My Agenda Against Hilary and What I’m “Hiding” I have never sat to tea … Continue reading

Spend Money on Development

As small home-based business owners, most of us are used to operating on a shoe-string budget. After all, we are in business to make money (among other things) and we do want to make a profit–part of making a profit in a small operation means keeping expenses under control. Still, we do have to spend some money on research and development if we are going to keep moving our business in the direction of growth. I know that most of us are not huge corporations with a nice, fat, separate budget line item for marketing and one for research and … Continue reading

Teens Saving Money

What is the best way to teach teens money saving tips? Most teens I know only love to spend money. For a parent teaching kids about savings it basically involves the fine art of motivation. Kids are certainly all about instant gratification. Although teens are starting to look and act like adults, they are still very much kids at heart. The maturity around setting limits, especially with money, has not been instilled in their development. But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start teaching your teen money saving strategies. Just be patient, knowing that your advice and tips will probably not … Continue reading

Better Off Not Knowing

As parents, we want the best for our children.  We want to protect them from harm and ensure them every success in life.  To that end, most of us take to heart information provided by experts, such as doctors, researchers and scientists.  However, more and more these days it seems said experts are spending way too much time, money and resources analyzing subjects that most parents are better off not knowing. Case in point:   A recent study regarding diapers, babies and the ability to walk.  According to three reputable developmental scientists, who were able to convince some entity to … Continue reading

Rick Santorum’s Health Insurance is Insufficient

Rick Santorum is one of the Republican candidates who is hoping to become the Republican nominee for the 2012 Presidential election. In his campaign, he has mentioned many times that he would like to repeal the entire Affordable Care Act. Interestingly, his own health insurance is insufficient to cover the medical needs of his family. It is no secret that Rick Santorum has extreme dislike for the health reform laws that are part of the Affordable Care Act, ACA. He has made it clear that if he is elected President of the United States, one of the things he wants … Continue reading
