Do You Miss Being Part of a “Team” Now That You Have a Home Business?

One of the focuses in many workplace environment in the last couple decades has been the encouragement of a “team” approach to work. Many companies organize themselves into teams instead of departments and individuals are evaluated on how good of a “team player” they are in the work environment. Going solo with your own home business may be a bit of a culture shock if you’re used to working as part of a team. Not being part of a team means that you are in charge of making all the decisions, but it also means that you really have to … Continue reading

Even if you don’t operate a home-business, you still have home “busy-ness”.

One of my closest friends called me yesterday and told me she had been reading my blog and that it was helping her focus on issues she hadn’t thought about before. Ironically, my friend doesn’t own or operate a home-business, but she does spend countless hours from home volunteering for a non-profit agency. It was the ultimate complement. I adore this gal. She is organized, upbeat, energetic and motivated. Having her tell me that *I* was helping her, was a bit like having my doctor ask me for medical advice. Needless to say, I was honored. It made me think. … Continue reading

Just Because You Have a Home Business – Doesn’t Mean You Have to Work from Home

I am so excited I can hardly stand it. Tomorow is “me-day”. While most women shop, get a facial, a pedicure, a massage or just veg-out in front of soaps on “me-day”, I work…and I love every minute of it. My “me-day” takes place on Thursdays when I drop my daughter off at preschool for four hours while my son spends a few hours at a local daycare. I make a bee-line for my favorite coffee shop. I order my favorite latte, Love Potion #9 (white chocolate and cinnamon) and I sit in my favorite cozy leather chair with my … Continue reading

Stimulating Creativity When You Work Alone

I don’t know about you, but I actually work fairly well with others. I didn’t start my own business so that I wouldn’t have to work with people and I confess I sometimes miss having other people to bounce ideas off of, brainstorm with, and just generally help me stimulate my creativity and generate innovative solutions to problems. I know that some people really are at their best when they are working alone and, while I can be pretty productive working by myself, I’m not always at my creative peak. I’ve been doing some experimenting and research, however, and have … Continue reading

Help! Building a Business Library at Home

Other than a couple books on “style” for writers and a nice new paperback copy of “Webster’s Dictionary,” (the old one finally becoming so tattered I had to let it go) my work-at-home reference library is somewhat lacking. I’ve accumulated many books on nonprofit management, fund raising, grant writing, and public policy over the years, but these aren’t really reference books I’ve been turning to recently as I’ve been building my freelancing and public relations business. It dawned on me that this might be a good topic to get some feedback from all of you work-at-homers about… In the past, … Continue reading
