Suffering (and Coping) With a Slow Computer

Computer troubles and issues can be the plague of any business-but with a small home business, many of us depend on our computers as our sole resource. We keep our books on the computer, generate invoices, manage web sites, conduct e-mail etc. When a computer gets bogged down or particularly slow-it can be frustrating and cost us money!

Yesterday, I had a slow computer day and it took all the self control I could muster not to have a major temper tantrum! I try to remind myself that there are other things I can do and that sometimes these little glitches in my professional life are "gifts"-a chance to focus on something else and get things back in perspective or balance. I don't always do so well with that however. After a frustrating morning, I did finally decide to step away from the desk and do something else while I waiting for things to get fixed. A trip to the bank and to the grocery store to get a chunk of my Thanksgiving shopping done (yes, the turkey and the ham) helped me feel like the day hadn't been a complete waste. But I have a hard time NOT thinking about the inefficiencies and the time I'm wasting (not to mention the time I'll have to spend catching up) when the computer gets temperamental!

By late afternoon, things were back to normal and I slipped back into productivity mode. I was still a bit on the crabby side, however. It is so strange that I have come to depend on computers and technology so much! In some ways my computer allows me a great deal of freedom as I am not tied to an office and can work from anywhere, but I am also tied to the computer in a rather intense way-I can't seem to work or function without it!
