The ABCs of Working at Home (H-M)

H = Household

Separate household items from work items. You may be able to deduct certain expenses, but only if those items are used strictly for work. Separate business and household bank accounts, email accounts, and even mail (by securing a Post Office Box if necessary) to keep things separate.

I = Isolation

Do not fall into the trap of becoming isolated. It is easy to do when you're working at home, because you do not get out as much as you used to. You work at home, and then you take care of your home and your family. Make sure you take some time to socialize, such as scheduling coffee or lunch with friends at least a couple times each month.

J = Junk Food

It is way too easy to grab a snack instead of taking the time to make something to eat when you are caught up in your work. Not only is it less than healthy, but eating junk food will also cause you to gain weight, especially if you spend a lot of time sitting in front of the computer to do your job (trust me!).

K = Kids

Take some time each day to play with your kids. They will quickly grow tired of hearing you say, "I can't; I'm working." Sometimes, you have to say that, but once in a while make sure you stop what you are doing and say, "Okay, let's play!" It's also a good idea to teach your kids about your business.

L = Lack of Interest

Lack of interest or "burn out" happens. Don't beat yourself up over it. It usually means in are in need of a well deserved break, so go ahead and give yourself permission to relax. You'll feel much better, and be more productive, if you take a day off from time to time. A home business can easily become a 24/7 job if you don't set limits.

M = Miscellaneous

No matter how many tips and tricks you learn about starting a business, other issues will pop up from time. Set aside a miscellaneous fund for unforeseen expenses, and try to make a list of potential problems or questions specific to your business so you can find resources to deal with them.
