The Benefits of Improvisingby Kori Rodley Irons | More from this Blogger 02 Jun 2007 06:49 PM All the planning and care in the world will not ward off the need for improvisation when it comes to our home businesses. Fortunately, we can actually practice improvising and develop skills for being able to fly by the seats of our pants-without seeming like we're flying by the seats of our pants... Have you ever been to an "Improv" show where talented comics and actors get up and improvise suggestions offered by the audience of from other sources? The entertainment comes from watching these individuals take a word or phrase and turn it into a skit or song on a second's notice. Maybe you've even taken an improvisational acting class at one time or another. You can actually apply these same skills to your home business and your business will benefit. The key skills associated with improvisation are being able to not only think on your feet, but to also be able to communicate and adjust to what the moment demands. This can mean solving a problem for a client or customer, adjusting to a changed deadline, or having the particulars of a project or order get completely changed and twisted around. Being able to roll with whatever comes your way and actually "come off" as though you've still got things under control is a great business skill. People will see you as someone who is unflappable and creative. But, how can you practice in order to improve your improvisational skills? Well you can play some improvising games as a family or with your kids-games like Pictionary and Charades are fun ways to boost your improvising skills. You might also consider taking a speech or public speaking class, or an acting or improvisational class at a community center or community college. While you're having fun, meeting people, and learning something new-you'll also be benefiting your home business!
