The Difference Between Jobs and a Business

One debate we have been having here on Families.com is the differences and similarities between a job and a business. Hava Lyon is our awesome jobs blogger. I am your wonderful and motivational home business blogger wink, wink) We are trying to keep our blogs separate so we don't write about the same subject. I have a feeling she will also write about this subject, and I think it will be fun to see her view on the differences.

Work from home IS work from home. However, one of the first things you need to decide is do you want a work from home JOB or a work from home BIZ.

What is the difference? Great question! I am so glad you asked.

A job is where you are hired by a company to work for them. You have set hours, set responsibilities and must report to someone else. In most cases there are no costs to you. However, you may be required to own certain equipment such as a fax machine, land line, computer and other home business items.

A business is where you hire yourself! You are in business for yourself and no one can fire you. There will always be some type of investment. Even companies you can join for free will cost you money in advertising, products, website, samples, catalogs, etc. You need to spend money to make money.

A home business can be direct sales like Mary Kay, Discovery Toys or Pampered Chef or it may be something you start from scratch like party planning, scrapbooking for others, or Ebaying.

In some cases, you may decide to do freelance work. This is where businesses will hire you, but you are still your own boss. Often writers, graphic artists, and consultants will take this route.

If you are unsure if you want a job or a business, here are things to keep in mind:

*A job can take a week to a year to find. A business begins when you start it.

*A job will pay you weekly. A business pays you when you work it and makes sales.

*A job will tell you exactly what you need to do. Though some businesses like direct sales will train you, you need to be willing to trouble shoot and problem solve.

*A job is an hourly wage. A business will give you a raise when you work harder.

With any work from home opportunity, it helps to be self-motivated, independent and good at setting goals and deadlines. Many people do both.

As always, follow your heart!
