Meeting and conference planning seems to be one of those businesses that is perfect for a home-based business. You can do most of the work from your home office, or from meetings with clients and venues, and it is something that can be done by one person. Before you jump in and start your meeting planning business, however, there are some things you might consider...

Meeting planners need to be incredibly organized. There are a lot of details to manage and balls to keep in the air and it is one of those businesses where it if you see someone doing it well, it looks much easier than it actually is. A person has to be able to work with vendors-hotels, conference centers, and meeting halls-in addition to conference participants, business owners and executives, and people from all walks of life. If you will be doing meetings on an international level, this can further complicate the different types of people you'll be working with (not to mention the different languages and time zones)-so organization is imperative.

Meeting planning is pretty much a "regular business hours" sort of job. There may not be as much flexibility in terms of time management as there are with other home-based businesses. While there are plenty of organizational things that can be done in off hours-you need to be available to talk with and meet with other people during regular business hours since most of your clients will keep to a more typical schedule.

Keep in mind that this is really a growing field and this can be both a good thing and a bad thing. It is good in that there is a lot of opportunity for well-connected, talented, and qualified meeting planners. But, there is also growing competition which may make it tougher to break in for a beginner. It might help to specialize in a certain type or size of meetings in order to build a solid reputation.

Meeting planning can be a perfect business for the home-based entrepreneur-there are just some considerations in order to discover if it is the right fit and the right home business for you.
