Should You Tweet?

The question was posed, “Should I have a Twitter account?” I wasn’t quite sure how to answer since Twitter is my least favorite form of social media. I much prefer Facebook and Pinterest. I am on Linkdin but rarely use it. However, it did land me a freelance writing job once and in that it was worth having the account. Since my blog automatically Tweets my posts it may appear I am on Twitter more then I really am. I had to get HootSuite linked to my phone so it would alert me to Tweets that mentioned me because I … Continue reading

What Your Facebook Page Can Tell Your Insurer

Most people don’t really take the time to think about the potential implications of the things that they post into social media websites. Insurance companies, however, are very aware that they can learn a thing or two from your Facebook page, and from what you tweet about on Twitter. This could have an affect on your insurance. Social media is something that many of us have become incredibly comfortable with. People use Twitter to tell people where they went for lunch, and what they ate. Often, this includes a link to a photo, so people can see what your lunch … Continue reading

Be Yourself to Be Successful

I’m not a multitasker. While some people might suggest that multitasking is a skill that I would be wise to develop as a home-based professional mom, I’m okay with not multitasking. It is not like I have never tried multitasking before, but every time I try it I feel like one of the things that I am doing does not get done as well as it could if I were not multitasking. It is just not for me. Other home-based professional parents may be excellent multitaskers, getting a couple of things done all at once and doing them all in … Continue reading

Tweet Tweet Is Your Business on Twitter?

Home-based professionals are often looking for cost-effective ways to get the word out about their business. Recently, social media like Twitter have become very popular with businesses large and small. Social media gives you the ability to share information with your clients and potential clients quickly and easily, and it puts the information right where they are looking – at their computer or smartphone. Just like with any form of advertising, your message will only be effective if you know how to use that media properly. For example, visiting blogs and leaving spammy comments with a link to your site … Continue reading

Insurance Coverage For Bad Tweets?

One of the interesting things about social media is that it is a means that can provide a person with moments of hope, as well as moments of discouragement. Insurance brokers in Canada are considering creating insurance coverage that would protect a person, or a company, from fallout due to nasty posts and tweets. Perhaps it is time for this kind of insurance to exist. It can be incredibly tempting to use Facebook or Twitter to say exactly what you are feeling about a specific person or a particular corporation. There are a lot of people who use Twitter to … Continue reading

What Is Your Dream Camera?

Right now I shoot with a Nikon D3000 and a 50mm prime. I actually love my current setup; it is a great system and I get pretty good results with it. It does have its limitations, however. For one, my camera does not have HD video, and that is something I would like for taking video of my family. The ISO (light sensitivity) is also limited, which means my pictures get noisy in low light conditions, even with the fast prime lens. (I do not use flash unless absolutely necessary.) My camera body is also geared towards those who are … Continue reading

TMI Tweets

A lot has been said about the moral corruption of kids who think sexting is an innocent game to be played on social media sites. But, what about the parents of those kids? What role do they play? What example do they set when they too are texting minute details about their own personal lives? When Twitter was first launched in 2006, I doubt anyone could image the impact it would have on family relations. After all, who would have thought that 140-character tweets could change the way a planet full of people communicate. These days millions of people, parents … Continue reading

Twitter Major

Would it be a major deal if your child told you he planned to major in Twitter-nomics in college? Yes, that Twitter. As in: “I can’t talk right now Ma; I’ve got to tweet my peeps, yo!” If you think I’m making this up, then you haven’t seen the recent proposal made by professors at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. A group of educators there are looking to incorporate the soaring popularity of interactive technology such as Twitter and Facebook into an actual four-year bachelor’s degree. “A working title has been Interactive Web Technology Management, but we’re not quite happy with … Continue reading

Controlling Email and Social Media

Working from home oftentimes entails battling many distractions. One of the most common is technology, in particular email and social media. We are often looking for ways to control our use of social media and the overwhelming amount of email we can get. One writer friend recently returned from a vacation and tweeted how she was working through 300 email messages. I know that if I take just one day away from email, it can quickly mount up. Then you feel like you need to catch up on what has happened on Facebook. But I think what we need to … Continue reading
