Websites for Writers: Deborah Ng's Job Leads

There are certain websites I visit regularly. I have my favorites bookmarked, and go down the list every morning checking out all the latest. As a writer still trying to build up a client list, I religiously visit one site each day. If you're a writer, and haven't heard of Deborah Ng, now is the time.

As a regular contributor to Writer's Row and LoveToKnow, and author of blog "Finding the Right Words," Deb (as we affectionately call her) knows what it takes to be successful in a writing career. As a frequent poster on the "WAHMs Who Write" forum, she also sees some of the hassles new writers put themselves through in order to get their career started. These include working for extraordinary low pay, taking chances on clients who may not pay, and dealing with editors who are more slave drivers than anything.

Of most concern to those in the writing field, especially Deb, is the tendency for new writers to take low paying jobs because they feel they have to. There are higher paying markets out there, but one does need to do a little searching for them. That's where Deb comes in. Waking up at 4 a.m., she begins her day spending up to several hours trolling job boards and other resources, putting together the leads for all writers to see.

The result of all this hard work and effort is Freelance Writing Jobs, Deb's blog. Supported only by donations and advertising revenue, Deb works hard and receives very little in return, all for the sake of providing quality leads for writers needing work. Due to the time that would be involved, leads are not researched, although if a particular lead seems "fishy," she will note this on her blog. In addition, readers can leave remarks in the comments section so other readers have a heads-up on any questionable responses from the job posters.

If you are a writer, or are hoping to start a career in freelance writing, I highly encourage you to check out Deb's job leads. There is a mixture of both big and smaller markets, low and high paying jobs. In addition, right now you can win a FREE coffee mug by entering the FWJ Procrastination Content - tell Deb your favorite way to procrastinate and you're in!

Good luck job hunting!

Diane, this is a GREAT job site for writers.

Yes, Deb's blog is great. That's where I found one of my best writing gigs-- LoveToKnow.

Isn't her blog wonderful? I hope there are some writers here who haven't discovered it yet, and get some use from my post! ;)

Misty, I have heard LTK is a great place - they offered me a position writing about watches, but I just couldn't see myself doing that topic. Maybe another one day.

I would definitely recommend LTK. The people there are great. Aside from Families.com ;), LTK is the best place I've ever worked. If you are reliable and fairly professional, they offer plenty of opportunity for growth. Even if you are hired for one specific site, you can reasonably expect to end up writing or editing for others. For example, I started out writing articles for one site, then I was promoted to site editor, and now I'm a group editor. It is truly a wonderful company.

Thanks Diane. I hadn't heard of Deb's site but I will check it out. I also get up at 4am each morning to complete my writing tasks before tackling my full time home business (protective play consulting/supervision/trainings and counseling). I'm exhausted but the love of writing keeps me going. Even when I take my son to extra curricula activities I pull out my note book and write what ever comes into my head - often it's my families.com creative journal entry.

I have just gotten a great job from Deb's site too! The pay is like quadruple what I am used to (but not quadruple the work!)

Deb is awesome. Thanks for this article, Diane. I haven't checked out her list in a while, and I need to do so more often.

I plan to start going by Deb's site more frequently.

Yes...I really love Deborah Ng's site as well...and let's not forget the place we talk to her: www.wahm.com. I recommend the "Wahms who Write" board to anyone who is starting their writing career (especially WAHMS). The networking and support is great there, and people are very generous with giving leads.

I must take more time to check this out thoroughly. My quick glance showed it looked good. Thanks. This is just another encouragement for this writer, See my blog http://christian.families.com/blog/enter-god-the-encourager
