Do You Open Up To Your Visiting Teachers?

I went visiting teaching last night. As usual, I always feel so much better about life when I get to go visiting teaching. This month, the topic of the visiting teaching message was visiting teaching. I thought that was interesting. Yet, I have gained a testimony over the years that visiting teaching is truly important to helping us become more like Christ. The message was very similar to the article I spoke of from the March Ensign. It spoke of being the hands of the Savior and what we can do to really minister to the sisters we visit. However, … Continue reading

You Can Talk About It, Read About It, But as Some Point, You Just Have to Do It

Recently, I was reminded of the wisdom in this saying when I was teaching someone how to do some new job tasks. She was as eager for me to turn them over and “stop talking” as I was eager to let things go and let her run with it. She reminded me that you can read about swimming and talk about swimming, but at some point you just have to jump in and swim. Since we were talking about work and business stuff, I thought this was a great reminder that there is no substitution for actually jumping in and … Continue reading

Is Telecommuting For You?

Telecommuting is a popular buzz word for a growing work style. It is not necessarily the same thing as owning and operating a home-based business, but increasingly, individuals are considering telecommuting instead of the “traditional” job. We’ve talked here on the Home Business blog before about the differences between an authentic home-based business and telecommuting, but many of us might be considering doing a little of both–or wonder if telecommuting wouldn’t be a better way for us to go than taking the risk and plunge into entrepreneurialism. With a telecommuting job, you really are working for someone else. There is … Continue reading

What Are You Doing About Growth Opportunities?

Good business managers don’t just react and adjust to growth, but they actually plan and strive to create opportunities where growth can occur. As small, home business owners, many of us are struggling just to stay afloat, let alone planning and looking for growth opportunities… Sure, sometimes growth just happens—but in successful and stable businesses, growth is usually something that is planned for. As a business owner, you will need to keep one eye on the future, even while you are wrestling with the details of every day. Your annual budgets should reflect anticipated growth (both in revenue and expense) … Continue reading

Do You Need More Recognition?

One of the motivators that may very well be missing from a home-based business is recognition. Without others around for us to compare our work to, or benchmarks or goals for us to reach in order to be recognized and celebrated—there may be some who start home businesses who actually miss all the accolades. We may toil away in the isolation and quiet of our little home offices or workshops—many of us working with clients and customers who we seldom, if ever see. Working from a home business can mean giving up being recognized at the company picnic or having … Continue reading

Personal Growth and Lessons From Our Work

Personal growth and developing lessons can happen anywhere—even in our work and business lives. Sometimes we may get so focused and caught up in the details and work of our home businesses, we don’t even realize all the opportunities for personal growth and development that crop and pop up during a busy work day. As adults, our work provides us with many opportunities to work through personal issues and build skills and character. The business world isn’t really as void of spirituality and humanity as we might sometimes think. Our home businesses provide us with the chance to explore such … Continue reading

What Your First Grader Should Know: Science

The most important thing to teach in early science is observation. Teaching your kids to observe, and make notes of what they see is as important as getting the concepts. They can draw pictures of what they see, make notes or even take along a camera to take pictures and scrap book their observations. Encourage, as much as possible, your child to describe details in what they see. Animals My kids are simply fascinated with the Sea World website. Check out the Shamu cam, print coloring pages and look at activities. Or why not play some animal games on the … Continue reading

Can You Afford the Top Places to Live?

Last week’s mail included the August issue of Money magazine. This issue contained one of my favorite features…Money’s Best Places to Live rankings. According to the article, their goal this year was to find small, but not too small cities (between 50,000 and 300,000 in population) that “combine the vibrancy of the city with the comforts of the suburbs.” As a born and raised suburbs girl who enjoys visiting big cities, I couldn’t wait to see what they had come up with. Here is their top ten: 1. Fort Collins, Colorado 2. Naperville, Illinois 3. Sugar Land, Texas 4. Columbia/Ellicott … Continue reading

Getting Through The Tough Spots

Being a parent is challenging as well as rewarding. One of the reasons that it is so challenging is that our children can bring about opportunities for personal growth that seem more like problems instead of opportunities when they arise. Sometimes we can see the opportunity in the moment and follow it. Other times, though, we get stuck. Dr. Laura Markham of Aha! Parenting.com offers some helpful advice about why we become stuck in negative patterns with our children and what we can do about it. In this first part of a two – part discussion about this topic, let’s … Continue reading

Unemployed? Home Based Work Could Be a Temporary or Permanent Solution

For people who find themselves out of work, working from home may be a faster path back to employment than trying to find another workplace – based job. It is true that unemployment numbers are improving, but unfortunately companies are still cutting back on staff or going out of business entirely. Often, there are many qualified and overqualified applicants for each position. Some job seekers, particularly those who have been trying to find a new job for months, end up taking positions that pay them less than they are worth and offer little challenge, fulfillment, or opportunities for growth. Losing … Continue reading
