Getting Started at RootsTech 2013

RootsTech 2013 will be taking place in March. It is a great big conference for genealogists and developers of the technology that genealogists will use. This year, they are doing something new called “Getting Started”, which is designed to help beginning genealogists. It may seem as though March of 2013 is far away. It is going to arrive faster than might be expected for genealogists who are interested in attending RootsTech 2013. “Early Birds” that buy their tickets right away will enjoy a discount on admission prices. It isn’t a bad idea to try and reserve a hotel room in … Continue reading

Genealogy and Family History Conferences for Fall

Genealogy conferences, and family history conferences, can be exciting to attend. Instead of watching a webinar while you sit at home, you get to travel and to meet with other genealogists. The FamilySearch blog has a short list of upcoming genealogy and family history conferences that are happening this Fall. I’ve added in a few additional ones. The AAHGS, which stands for the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, is having their 33rd AAHGS Conference on October 4, 2012, through October 7, 2012. It will take place in the Embassy Suites Airport Hotel in Greensboro, North Carolina. The theme is “Our … Continue reading

Family Tree University Has a Virtual Genealogy Conference

Typically, a genealogy conference will take place in a building, hotel, or conference center that is large enough to accommodate the crowds. If you cannot travel out to where it is taking place, then you will miss it. It’s nice that Family Tree University is having a Virtual Genealogy Conference. This could make it much easier for people to check it out. Family Tree University is not an accredited college. It is the name of the “learning center” (for lack of a better term) for Family Tree Magazine. It is a great resource for genealogists who want to learn more … Continue reading

A Good Cry Is What You Need

I love being a mother. There is nothing I’d rather do than parent my daughter. I feel that she is truly a gift. I wouldn’t have chosen to be a single parent but that’s the way it happened. I try to be positive, I want my daughter to always look on the bright side. Yes, sometimes life is hard, but that doesn’t mean you have to let it defeat you. I am always the first to say, keep your chin up, do it for your kids. Sometimes, I forget to take my own advice. Sometimes I feel sorry for myself. … Continue reading

How Heavy is Your Load?

Yesterday, our high councilman came to speak to us in Sacrament meeting. I have to be honest and say that through most of his talk I was in the hallway trying to bounce a baby boy to sleep. He finally did, so I snuck back in for the last 10 minutes of his talk. He shared a story that I thought was powerful, and made me think. He said that Elder Bednar came to visit at a recent regional conference in our area and shared a story that he wanted to share with us. Now, he was paraphrasing Elder Bednar, … Continue reading

LDS Holistic Living Conference

Did you know about the LDS Holisitic Living Conference? I didn’t either until last year when a friend of mine told me about it, and now, it is coming up again this weekend. I’m hoping I get the opportunity to go. If not this year, then definitely next year. What is it all about? Well, it is a one day conference dedicated to teaching members of the church about living healthier lives, both physically and spiritually. While the church does not officially endorse this conference, it is full of good information for any member of the church that wants to … Continue reading

Have You Heard of Story@Home 2012?

There is a brand new genealogy conference that is taking place this year! It is called Story@Home, and it includes workshops that will help genealogists to record family stories, to learn how to do research on them, and to learn how to share the stories with others. It is taking place in Utah this weekend. The first time I heard of Story@Home it was through a genealogy podcast. It was mentioned on a recent episode of Genealogy Gems. Carol Rice, the founder of Cherish Bound, and the Executive Chair of the upcoming Story@Home conference, was a special guest on a … Continue reading

Dealing with Taxes When You Work from Home

I always say it takes a disciplined person to work from home. But that applies not only to the work; it also applies to setting aside taxes. I am an independent contractor for a web content company; therefore, my taxes are not automatically taken out from my paycheck. If I’m not disciplined to take out the money, I can easily find myself in a deep hole. Now there is a difference between someone who is self-employed and an independent contractor. The IRS can help you determine which one you fall under. This year I did a little better job with … Continue reading
