Freelance Work Makes Work Accessible From Anywhere

Lately, I have been talking a lot about freelance writing. There are a couple of reasons why I talk about it so much. Firstly, I love it. I had no idea that I could have so much love for a career that I basically stumbled into as I looked for work that was compatible with being a stay at home mom. Secondly, many of the topics that I talk about in regards to freelance writing can be applied to freelance work of all kinds. The variety of work available to freelancers of all sorts is simply amazing. The third reason … Continue reading

The Trend Toward Co-Blogging and Blog Contributors

I first began blogging about two years ago. Up until that point I had not even read a blog. I began blogging to house my writing and share my thoughts. I never intended for blogging to become an important part of my life. I’m a wife with four kids and a business. That last thing I needed was another thing on my plate. However, soon blogging became a passion of mine. In my time on the blogosphere I noticed an interesting trend. Solo bloggers are starting to become group bloggers. The trend is not lost on me. I contribute to … Continue reading

I, Too, Am A Writer

I have really enjoyed reading the recent posts about writing that were written by my fellow home business bloggers Stephanie Romero and Richele McFarlin, who are both writers. I, too, am a writer and sometimes I wonder what people think when I tell them that that is what I do for work. Whenever someone does ask what I do, I explain it thoroughly yet briefly since I am not one to go on and on about myself. I simply say that I’m primarily a stay at home mom, and I practice law and do freelance writing work on a part … Continue reading

“I’m a Writer.”

My lovely colleague, Stephanie Romero, recently wrote an article called What Makes a Writer? I found this to be quite timely as I was pondering that myself. I found myself pondering the question because recently I was asked what I did for a living. While you can hardly call it a living, I found myself saying, “I’m a writer.” Upon hearing myself utter such words I cringed at the thought I would be asked how many books I have written or many awards I had won. Instead, my response was met with a pleasantly surprised, “Really, what do you write … Continue reading

What Makes a Writer?

Someone recently asked, “When do you know that you can call yourself a writer?” The basis of this question was whether or not the title of “writer” only applies to those who get paid. Good question and one that I wrestled with for many years. I have been writing since high school. Back then it was mostly poetry but I was always commended on my work. A teacher one time told me that I was going to make something of myself with my writing and she wouldn’t be surprised to see my name in print. That was over two decades … Continue reading

How Insurance Underwriters See Halloween

One of the fun things you can do to celebrate Halloween is visit one of those local haunted house attractions set up by a group in your community. For most people, this is good, scary, fun. For insurance underwriters though, it’s a whole lot more scary than it is fun. Where the rest of us see a good time, an underwriter sees potential insurance claims, waiting to happen. Let’s face it, Halloween is a truly bizarre holiday. The things we do to celebrate Halloween are not things that most of us would even consider doing at other times of the … Continue reading

When the Underwriters Call You

Recently, my husband and I visited with our insurance agent, and filled out the forms that are required in order for us to apply for life insurance. We were told to expect a phone call from an underwriter, who will ask each of us some health questions. Today, the underwriter called. Our insurance agent told us that the phone call was nothing to be worried about. She said it was best to answer everything with a simple “yes” or “no”, and to be truthful. There was no need to go into a long story about a particular health topic. Just … Continue reading
