Hearty Dips for Your New Year’s Eve Party

Thirty-two games, 64 teams… the road to the College Bowl Championship has begun at my parent’s house. With the University of Hawaii Warriors about to make history at the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day, my parent’s seaside home has turned into party central and their kitchen is at the center of all the action. Here in Wisconsin we’re gearing up to watch our beloved Badgers (my alma mater) take on Tennessee in the Outback Bowl on January 1st. And around the world home cooks are getting ready to ring in 2008 with their own celebrations. Whether you are hosting … Continue reading

Depression: It’s More Than Being Sad

Depression is a clinical disorder in which the brain no longer produces the proper amount of serotonin. This can happen for a number of reasons and can last for invariable amounts of time. For some reason there often is a stigma associated with depression. I even once had a boy I was dating tell me there was no such thing. Another man I know told me to “build a bridge and get over it.” For someone suffering from depression these comments were both hurtful and completely untrue. I was dealing with something I literally had no control over. Hard as … Continue reading

There Will Not Be a Family Tree Maker 2013

Genealogists who use Ancestry.com might be wondering when the next version of the Family Tree Maker software will come out. The short answer is that you can stop waiting. Instead of creating a Family Tree Maker 2013, there will be periodic updates to Family Tree Maker 2012. On July 13 of this year, there was a big problem with the Mac version of the Family Tree Maker software. Ancestry.com noted on their blog that they were were aware of the issue and were “working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible”. Whatever the issue was, it was not … Continue reading

Starting a Brand-New Journey

Have you ever gotten to a point where you know things aren’t working, but you aren’t sure what to do about it? You know you’re on the right path, but suddenly you feel a little unsure, like you’ve lost your sense of direction and you aren’t sure how to find it again? This has been my experience for the last year as I’ve contemplated my decision to homeschool. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the right choice for me and my family. At the risk of sounding melodramatic, when I consider sending my children to public school, I … Continue reading

Reasons To Take Vacations

Have you planned a vacation for yourself for this year? Sometimes, home-based professionals go years without taking a vacation because they feel that they can not afford to take the time or spend the money to do so. As much as you may think that you are getting ahead by opting out of taking one or more vacations each year, you may not be doing yourself any favors. There are a few reasons that vacations are actually important to the success of all professionals, including those of us that work from home. What’s more, you do not need to spend … Continue reading

What They Need Most

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been taking an online organization course. I’ve always been the kind of person who makes to-do lists, and I like to stay organized. Now, note that I like to stay organized – I didn’t say it always happens, and the last two months have been absolutely crazy busy for me. As I sat contemplating my to-do list and following the course’s homework assignment of thinking about my priorities, I contemplated my family. I wanted to start listing all the wonderful things I was going to do for them, from color-coordinating their closets to fluffing … Continue reading

Inches Off!

I am holding my breath, not daring to think too much of it. I have finally gotten under a plateau that I have been battling for months now. Many, many months. I teetered back and forth all of this time, but I have finally reached it. I am afraid to make a move or rather not to make a move. I have been exercising no more than usual, but using different types of exercise all at the same time. The stepper machine has worked wonders on getting the inches off and toning the lower half up. I can feel it … Continue reading

Ironing: The Chore we love to hate

Well, the title may not be completely accurate. There are people who actually enjoy ironing. I just don’t happen to be one of them. I guess I don’t really hate it (although my recent bought with ironing did inspire the title) but let’s just say, it’s not my favorite thing to do. I know I’m not alone. In my case, it may be that I’m just not that great at doing it. I tend to burn myself and my clothes and those stubborn wrinkles seem to get the best of me. Wash and wear works for me. However, there are … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 16:10-19

Nephi and his family have been camped a short distance from Jerusalem while they took care of the remainder of their business with the city. Now with the brass plates and with new brides, they are ready to head out into the wilderness, never to look back. The first morning of their new lives, a discovery is made. 10. And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. … Continue reading
