When In Doubt, Do Good Work

I was chatting with an older, retired person recently and lamenting how it is sometimes difficult for me to stay focused or know exactly what I should be doing to build my home business. This woman had operated her own beauty salon for many, many years. She listened carefully to me and then she offered a tiny morsel of advice. She said that when I'm having trouble figuring out how best to spend my time or what I should be doing, I should just do good work.

So, I jotted down this quotation of wisdom and can now remind myself that when in doubt, I can still do good work. It does not have to be flashy, or even inspired, it just needs to be honest, thorough, and done to the very best of my ability. Isn't it strange how we can get caught up on all sorts of "have tos" and trendy suggestions for modern business, but when it comes right down to it-we just need to get back to the basics of integrity and hard work?

I have to admit I felt a little foolish and very much put into my place. After all, this woman had operated her own home-based business back before the term "home-based business" was even created. It was just the work she did so she could still be home to take care of her kids. She did all her own bookkeeping, ordered supplies, maintained the same customers for years and years, and was a successful businessperson without anyone else ever realizing it. And through it all, she just reminded herself to "do good work." At least, that's how I like to think of this woman working away in her home-based beauty salon-and I'll take my inspiration wherever I can get it!
