Never Too Old

I was only 21 when I got divorced. I was extremely young, but I felt like I had lived the life of a much older woman. As time went on I wasn’t sure I would ever get married again. It seemed like I had been single for so long already, I just couldn’t understand why it was taking me so long to find someone again. I felt like I had a lot to offer, but all the men that kept coming into my life were, well…less than what I wanted for me and my son. Stealing credit cards and sneaking … Continue reading

Why I Thought My Grandma Didn’t Love Me

It’s funny how years and maturity can change your view of things from your childhood. I know all memories are colored by time and usually we have a rosier view of the past than we did at the time but sometimes, it’s warranted. My father died when I was a toddler so every summer I got to spend a week or two with my father’s mother, Grandma D. My father’s family all lived out of state so we didn’t see them on a regular basis. I remember as a child feeling unloved by my grandmother and one of the reasons … Continue reading

Benefits For The Self-Employed Part 2: Retirement

We have already discussed some of the options available to home-based professionals for one of the benefits that they often give up when they leave a traditional job. While health insurance is probably the most common benefit received by people in the world of traditional work, retirement plans are a close second. Not every job offers a retirement plan, but many do, and people that are thinking of making the leap to self-employment often wonder how they will plan for their retirement on their own. Fortunately, there are a few retirement planning options that self-employed people can choose from. It … Continue reading

We’re Broke! Why Do We Need a Financial Planner? Part 2

Once you have made the commitment to achieving financial independence and have selected your advisor, the next step is the discovery interview. It is at this point that your planner will be attempting to ascertain how you feel about money. While that may sound pretty straightforward, money is a highly charged matter for most of us; it has come to represent many of the key structures of our lives—like security, safety, power, prestige, independence, and even love. In American society, money—how much we have, how we earn it, and how we spend it—has become a stand-in for our moral character. … Continue reading

We’re Broke! Why Do We Need a Financial Planner?! Part 1

After my divorce, the financial planner who had worked with my former husband and I continued to call me every six months or so, wondering if I was ready to put a new financial plan into place. I was flattered, if a little confused, about why he was bothering with me. I had primary physical custody of our infant daughter, I was receiving no financial support from her dad, and I was working for a notoriously underpaying local non-profit. Let’s face it, I was broke. The answer to the question, of course, is that it is an undisputed fact that … Continue reading

Can You Be Fit Forever?

According to fitness experts, yes, you can–provided you keep working out well past retirement. No one enjoys living with the aches, pains and overall discomfort that come with aging, so to avoid the lower back spasms and stiff joints, fitness experts advise to stick with a well-rounded exercise routine as you get on in years. Backing up the experts’ advice is a new study, which found that fitness, strength and flexibility do not simply fade away with age, as long as you make the right lifestyle choices. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that individuals who partake in aerobic activity, … Continue reading

Why do I Get Suspicious when Things go Smoothly?

I like to think that I am an optimist at heart. When it comes to my home business and work efforts, however, I have to be honest—I tend to expect things to be rough and hard. When things are going smoothly and seem to be falling into place, I get quite skeptical. I just have this sneaky feeling that something major is about to go wrong… Many of you know by now that organization is my crutch (particularly when it comes to my business)—I depend on getting things organized and all my ducks in a row in order to make … Continue reading

Why Live Frugally?

A question that often comes up is why should anyone live so frugally? This is usually followed up by, “Don’t you have a life?” Once and a while someone might say, “I could never live like that. I’d rather work than wash out baggies.” Those questions are important, even the abrasive one about baggies. They prove that many people don’t really understand a frugal lifestyle. I live frugally, and yes, I do have a life; a very good one. I do work for an income, although it is only part time. I seldom wash out baggies because, well I don’t … Continue reading

Garth Brooks’ Active Retirement

Perhaps Garth Brooks’ definition of retirement is not the same as mine. I think of retirement as a time to lounge around on tropical islands (with no time pieces in sight) sipping on fruity libations and catching up on some serious zzz’s. Brooks meanwhile is officially retired and he’s keeping the work schedule of a half dozen entertainers. This weekend the country music star took to the stage for five hours to play five concerts at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in front of nearly 100,000 people. Not exactly what I would call retirement. Brooks says he interrupted his … Continue reading
