Work Motivators: Passion Vs. Security

Many of us stayed in more traditional jobs far longer than wanted to for one very important reason: security. Let's face it, security can be a huge motivation for taking and sticking with a corporate job and the lack of it can be a big deterrent for those considering branching out on their own and starting a home based business. It can seem as though the passion for independence and work that one is excited about is battling that need for safety and security and it can be anybody's guess which one is going to win...

A strange thing happens when a person gets going with a home business, however--you might actually realize that you have more security when you are your own boss and running your own business than you ever realized! I know that I clung to the security of working for someone else for the longest time. It was not until I started doing more and more work on my own that I realized that I was less susceptible to the financial whims of a company and I no longer had to depend on someone else to determine whether I was working hard enough or how much I was worth. I suddenly felt MORE in control and more stable in my work than I had ever felt before.

It is still hard to go completely solo and take that big leap. Many of us do it gradually, maintaining a day job or working part-time at something that has that traditionally secure feeling and that predictable pay check for a while until we gain the confidence to follow our passion and cut the "traditional" job loose. But, for many of us, we eventually realize that the battle between passion and security that we have been fighting all these years was really a myth and that it is quite possible to actually have both!
