Your Local Farmer is a Home-Based Business

I get excited this time of year as spring unfolds knowing that our local farmer’s market will soon be up and going. I know that the early spring selections are not terribly diverse, but I love perusing the offerings under the awnings and getting fresh greens, peas, and other spring vegetables. One of the things that I like about buying my produce from the farmers at the farmer’s market is that I know I am supporting local home businesses… Farmers really are the original “work from home” individuals and many are still family businesses or co-operatives of like-minded individuals. It … Continue reading

TV Wives as Role Models: My Faves from the 1980s-Present Day

So far I listed my favorite TV role model wives from the 1950s to the 1970s. This list takes us through the eighties to current times. 1980s • Elyse Keaton (Family Ties): Her down to earth demeanor and strength of conviction helped her be the beacon her husband and kids turned to for guidance through rough waters. • Jennifer Hart (Hart to Hart): She was glamorous, stunning, stylish, and smart and she got to have all these amazing adventures catching bad guys with her dashing, devoted husband. • Roseanne Connor (Roseanne): This one straddles both the eighties and nineties since … Continue reading

TV Wives as Role Models: My Faves from the 1950s-1970s

Since November is National Inspirational Role Model Month, I thought it’d be fun to list some television wives I’ve admired over the years. Even though they are TV wives, in a TV world where everything’s scripted and a happy ending is assured, there’s wisdom and inspiration to be gleaned from their foibles, mishaps, and messes nonetheless. Because conflict, confrontation, and duress are guaranteed at some point during the half hour or hour time slot in which their shows run. That’s what makes it entertaining: to see how they’ll deal with, and eventually overcome, the problems they’re faced with. I’ve listed … Continue reading

You May Be an Entrepreneurial Role Model

Sure, some people might think you’re crazy to give up the security of a nine-to-five, traditional job–and they may be very vocal in letting you know how they feel about it too. But, there are others who just may be looking to you as a role model–someone who has taken the plunge and started their own home business. I admit that I do feel a bit of this when people are asking me about my work or pumping me for details about how it works. I feel like I have some responsibility to be both honest and encouraging. I am … Continue reading

Tips for Direct Sales (From a Customer/Hostess)

Recently, I hosted one of those parties–never mind what the product was, but it was the typical in-home party where I invite my friends and then a direct sales representative comes in and demonstrates the products. We sat around and ate fondue and chocolate mint cake, sipping sangria and the main event was the merchandise. I’ve had a few of thee parties and while I have never been tempted to become a sales representative myself, I do have some “critique” from this end that could be helpful to those who are… My first suggestion is to arrive early and get … Continue reading
